The Department of Culture and Media Studies is announcing a temporary position as a university lecturer in museology. The position is a 50% substitute role, starting on 2026-02-01 or by agreement, and extending until 2026-06-30.
Job Description
The responsibilities include teaching, leading seminars, supervising theses, and conducting examinations. Teaching will take place in both campus courses, such as the Industry Training for Museums and Cultural Heritage, as well as in online courses. The role may also involve teaching in the Master's program in Applied Cultural Studies. Regular course and program administration is included, as well as course development work. The position also includes professional development time equivalent to 20% of the working hours.
The work location is Umeå, and a high physical presence in the environment is required.
Eligibility Criteria for the Position
To be eligible for appointment as a university lecturer, candidates must demonstrate pedagogical proficiency and have obtained a doctoral degree in museology. Candidates with a doctoral degree in another related field who can demonstrate equivalent museological competencies, or possess other professional skills relevant to the subject matter and responsibilities of the position, are also eligible.
Proficiency in Swedish (or another Scandinavian language) and English, as well as the ability to teach in these languages, is a requirement for the position.
Selection Criteria
The selection criteria include: scientific and pedagogical proficiency in the field of museology, or equivalent museological competencies in a related subject, experience in online teaching, and administrative skills. Other criteria include good collaborative ability and the competence and suitability required to perform the tasks effectively.
Scientific proficiency must be demonstrated through independent scientific production. The assessment criteria include:
- Breadth and depth of research – quality and scope
- Originality in research
- Productivity
- Contribution to the international scientific community
- Engagement in the scientific community
- Ability to secure external research funding in competition
- Collaboration with the surrounding society
Pedagogical proficiency for the position of university lecturer must be demonstrated through documented experience of teaching based on scientific principles at the university level.
Assessment criteria for pedagogical proficiency in scientific positions include:
- Ability to plan, implement, and evaluate teaching, as well as the ability to supervise and examine students at all educational levels
- Ability to vary teaching methods and examination forms in relation to expected learning outcomes and the character of the subject
- Experience of collaboration with the surrounding community in the planning and implementation of education
- Participation in the development of learning environments, teaching materials, and textbooks
- A reflective approach to student learning and one's own teaching role
Competence can be acquired through higher education pedagogical training, other relevant training for teaching at the university, or documented, proven experience of teaching at the university.
Particularly meritorious is scientific and pedagogical proficiency in the areas of cultural heritage tourism and the accessibility of cultural heritage.
Balancing Assessment Criteria
Equal care should be given to the assessment of both pedagogical and scientific proficiency. In balancing these two assessment criteria, they should be given equal weight.
Particular emphasis should be placed on scientific and pedagogical proficiency in the areas of cultural heritage tourism and the accessibility of cultural heritage.
In assessing scientific proficiency, special attention should be given to research competence within the field of museology.
In assessing pedagogical proficiency, special attention should be given to subject competence within the field of museology.
Additionally, significant weight should be given to experience in online teaching.
Administrative skills will also be considered.
In assessing other criteria, weight will be given to experience in collaboration within teaching teams and the competence and suitability required to perform the tasks effectively.
