Stockholm City Library operates throughout the city of Stockholm, with around 40 libraries, approximately 4.5 million visitors, and more than 9,000 programs each year. The position of City Librarian is strategically important, with responsibility for a comprehensive operation consisting of nearly 500 employees organized into 12 units.

Your role
Your responsibility is to lead and coordinate Stockholm City Library to promote the status of literature and interest in education. You will lead, develop, and plan the library's operations, administration, and finances. The role also involves representing the organization, performing representation tasks, and inspiring learning, development, and change.
You will have overall responsibility for internal and external communications, with a particular focus on building relationships with neighborhoods, administrations, companies, civil society, and the business community. The City Librarian collaborates closely on issues related to children and youth, urban development, and digital transformation. One of the most important aspects of the role is making decisions that promote a cohesive library with shared values and objectives.
You will work closely with the head of administration and be part of the management team. You will lead the management team of Stockholm City Library, which includes two area managers and 12 unit managers. The department is undergoing a transformation process, and you will be responsible for leading this work in close collaboration with other managers and employees. You will report to the head of administration.
Your qualifications and experience
We are looking for someone who has:
- An academic degree in library and information science or another subject area deemed relevant by the employer
- Current and extensive managerial experience within the library sector or another sector considered equivalent
- Documented experience in change management
- Current experience as a manager in public operations.
It is advantageous if you have:
- Current experience in leading through other managers
- Leadership training
- Knowledge of methods and tools for driving change processes and organizational development

Additional Information
The Culture Administration applies a model with fixed-term managerial contracts of 5 years, which can be extended for additional periods. The assignment is combined with a permanent position at the administrative level (e.g., project manager) that guarantees employment security.
The position is located within the Culture Administration, but the work is highly mobile between all the city’s libraries. There is an opportunity for remote work part of the time. Travel may occur as part of the job.
The City Librarian is tasked with participating in the department's emergency organization. The City Librarian is designated for wartime placement. More information will be provided during a potential interview.
