The Swedish Institute for North American Studies (SINAS) is a department within the Department of English.
The main purposes of the institute are to conduct and promote research and teaching in the field of North American studies, primarily concerning the USA (American studies). We adopt broad humanistic and social science perspectives on American society, history, and politics, and have a specific research profile focused on the relationships between Sweden and the USA.
The institute offers both undergraduate and advanced level courses in the subject area and conducts its own research on American history, politics, and society in a broad sense. SINAS has also developed a significant outreach program aimed at disseminating knowledge, building networks, and generating interest in the field at Uppsala University and in Sweden through seminars, workshops, lectures, symposia, and conferences. An important part of SINAS's work since its establishment has been to participate in knowledge dissemination about the USA in collaboration with the surrounding community.
**Job Responsibilities**
Teaching within SINAS courses in American studies, which includes courses in American transnational history, politics, cultural heritage, as well as the study of Swedish-American relations. Other courses within the Department of English may also be included. Independent research. Participation in the development of SINAS's operational activities in collaboration with the director of SINAS and other staff.
**Eligibility Requirements**
To be eligible for appointment as a temporary university lecturer in North American studies, candidates must have obtained a doctoral degree in a relevant humanistic or social science subject, demonstrated pedagogical competence, and possess the personal qualities required to perform the duties of the position effectively. Both the doctoral dissertation and subsequent research should have a clear focus on the study of the USA concerning history, society, and/or politics, including its transnational relations with the world.
Documented ability to teach in English and excellent collaborative skills are required.
**Assessment Criteria**
In the selection among eligible applicants, equal weight will be given to scientific and pedagogical competence.
Scientific competence refers to research qualifications. In assessing scientific competence, scientific quality will be the primary consideration. The scientific qualifications should be within the study of the USA, including its transnational relations with the world. Experience in interdisciplinary research within North American studies is an advantage.
Pedagogical competence refers to educational and teaching qualifications. In assessing pedagogical competence, pedagogical quality will be the primary consideration. The pedagogical qualifications should be within teaching American studies. Interdisciplinary pedagogical work within North American studies is an advantage. Particular weight will be given to experience in teaching transnational American history, politics, cultural heritage, and the study of Swedish-American relations. Pedagogical competence must be well documented to allow for quality assessment.
