About this role

The Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI) is a government agency conducting world-leading research in defense and security to support Sweden's military and civilian defense. The research spans several areas, including underwater technology, cyber defense, space, electronic warfare, sensor systems, civil defense, CBRNe (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive substances), military platforms including weapons and protection, as well as security policy analyses. About the Position As a workshop technician, you will work alongside research activities to develop various types of test equipment and prototypes. This may involve equipment for laboratory use or equipment for ground-based, marine, and airborne trials. During the work, you will maintain close contact with project managers/clients. The fine mechanical experimental workshop features diverse activities ranging from machining (turning/milling, drilling), design work in Alibre Design, 3D printing, welding, and bench work. You will work with various machine types commonly found in a mechanical workshop. Tasks will vary from simple sheet metal details to more complex solutions where multiple steps form the final product. The workshop's broad activities provide excellent opportunities for those with drive and interest to both broaden and deepen their competence. We also participate to some extent in field trials where we get to see our equipment used in practice. About the Department You will be part of the Workshop/Field Service section within the Electronic Warfare division. The section's main activities include design, manufacturing, and reworking of research-related materials, ranging from fiber optics to aerial targets. Do You Have the Competence Profile We Need? Requirements: - High school education in workshop technology, or equivalent knowledge - Knowledge and experience using conventional machine types - Technical interest and problem-solving ability - Good computer skills, including proficiency with the Office suite - Class B driver's license to transport to and from trial sites - Good ability to express yourself verbally and in writing in Swedish - The work requires a high degree of service-mindedness and you should be prepared for diverse and varying tasks with direct internal customer contacts at FOI - The work requires good collaborative skills, initiative, and the ability to solve design problems together with colleagues and clients - You are meticulous and have good precision skills Meritorious It is advantageous if you have knowledge/previous experience operating manual and CNC-controlled cutting machines.
