About this role

Would you like to combine technology and natural sciences in a role where your efforts contribute to societal benefit? We are looking for a model and/or systems developer, preferably with experience in Python and an interest in atmospheric chemistry and physics. With us, you will be part of a team that develops innovative solutions to understand and improve our air quality. Within SMHI's area of expertise in Air Quality, we develop technologically advanced systems and models for evaluating and monitoring air quality in Sweden and around the world. Our systems manage air quality in our cities, Sweden's official emissions statistics, and preparedness for nuclear accidents, among other things. In addition to providing modeling systems and carrying out assignments for both authorities and commercial users, we participate in and drive research projects to improve the environment and health. We are now seeking a model and/or systems developer with an interest in both technology and the scientific context in which we operate. With us, you will work at the intersection of development, operational expertise, and research. You will have the opportunity to influence how we work and how our technical solutions are designed. This is a chance to combine programming knowledge with an understanding of scientific data and models in a socially significant context. We operate in a Linux-based environment and primarily use Python and PostgreSQL. Your tasks will include analysis, refinement, and visualization of data within our area of expertise. Your work will play a crucial role in transforming complex scientific information into clear and reliable decision-support tools for various target groups in society. The role involves contact with both internal and external users, which requires good collaboration skills and a confident communication style. We are therefore looking for someone who excels at building relationships and enjoys collaborating across various fields of expertise. The work is carried out both independently and in cross-functional projects, providing a varied and dynamic workday. About you For this position, you need to have an academic background in engineering or natural sciences, or equivalent qualifications that SMHI deems comparable. You should also have several years of work experience in programming, preferably in Python, and possess excellent skills in Swedish and good skills in English. Knowledge and/or experience in the following areas is advantageous: • Advanced programming skills (multiple languages, version control, relational databases, Linux, etc.) • Expertise in air quality • Data visualization, such as through web maps and GIS • Technical project management We appreciate your interest in science and societal benefit, as well as your ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. The role also requires you to be collaborative and able to build strong relationships with colleagues, project participants, and external contacts. Since the work is conducted in multiple projects simultaneously, you need to be able to prioritize, adapt to changing conditions, and possess strong problem-solving and analytical skills. We welcome your application! Employment form: Permanent position Location: The position is based at SMHI's office in Norrköping. Your main workplace will be in the office, but there is also the possibility to work from home when the business allows. Travel: National and international travel may occur.
