Change starts here!
The Faculty of Arts and Humanities, which is one of Linnaeus University's five faculties, is a dynamic, flexible, and international knowledge environment that encompasses both scientific and artistic activities across a wide range of subjects. We build complete academic environments where the interaction between teaching, research, and collaboration drives quality at the university and in the surrounding community.
The subject of archaeology is part of the Department of Cultural Sciences, which includes programs in archaeology, library and information science, history, cultural and physical geography, sociology of culture, and religious studies. The archaeological subject environment consists of nine members who primarily research in the areas of critical heritage studies and archaeology. A UNESCO professorship in heritage futures is also included in this environment. Teaching in critical heritage studies takes place on campus as part of the Bachelor's program in Heritage in the Present and Future. Education in archaeology is offered at the undergraduate level on campus and as hybrid teaching.
Subject area for the position: archaeology
Work location: Kalmar. Since Linnaeus University operates in both Växjö and Kalmar, travel between locations may be required.
Scope of employment: The position is a fixed-term employment at 60% with a start date of April 1, 2026, or by agreement, until January 17, 2027, with the possibility of extension.
Job Description
The responsibilities include teaching in critical heritage studies and archaeology, including supervision and assessment of undergraduate thesis projects. Teaching and supervision primarily occur at the undergraduate level, but opportunities for teaching and supervision at the advanced level may also arise.
Teaching is conducted on campus in both dedicated campus courses and in hybrid format, which involves a mix of on-campus and distance students in the same session. Instruction is mainly in Swedish or another Scandinavian language.
The position includes time for administration, and the holder is expected to participate in departmental and institutional meetings. Time for professional development is also included in the role.
Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for the position of lecturer, candidates must demonstrate pedagogical skill and possess a doctoral degree in archaeology or have equivalent scientific competence. Equivalent scientific competence typically refers to a degree from a foreign university with roughly the same level and quality as a Swedish doctoral degree in archaeology.
According to Linnaeus University’s employment regulations, pedagogical competence must encompass planning, implementation, and evaluation of teaching, as well as supervision and assessment.
Documented teaching experience in critical heritage studies and archaeology is meritorious. Since the teaching encompasses both critical heritage studies and archaeology, a combination of experiences in both critical heritage research and archaeology is particularly valuable. Strong communication and collaboration skills are highly regarded.
Assessment Criteria
When hiring a lecturer, the degree of skill that is required for eligibility will be the basis for assessment. The evaluation of pedagogical skill will be given equal consideration as the evaluation of other qualifying criteria.
Guiding the assessment of scientific skill will be the independence, scope, and quality of the applicant's own research.
Pedagogical competence should be demonstrated through teaching and includes development, planning, implementation, and evaluation of instruction, as well as supervision and assessment. The pedagogical skill should reflect a thoughtful approach to students' learning and the educator's own teaching role.
When the university hires new teachers, candidates will be chosen based on a qualitative overall assessment of competence and skill, determining who has the best conditions to carry out and develop current tasks and contribute to the successful evolution of the institution.
