Background

The rapid development of technology brings many significant advantages but also poses potential risks to the environment, property, and personal safety. Traditional frameworks and methods for systems safety have been effective, but they often struggle to keep pace with the complexity and dynamics of modern technological systems. The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) offers an opportunity to enhance these frameworks and provide more robust, adaptable, and proactive safety mechanisms.

Purpose

How can AI technology be integrated into existing safety frameworks to improve the identification, assessment, and mitigation of risks to the environment, property, and people's safety in modern technological systems?

This research project aims to bridge the gap between traditional systems safety methods and modern technological advancements. By integrating AI into safety frameworks, the study seeks to provide a more dynamic, efficient, and purpose-driven approach to managing risks associated with technological systems. The results of this research could contribute to safer and more sustainable practices and ultimately have significant implications for industries reliant on technology.

Goals

  • To review and analyze current frameworks and methods for systems safety.
  • To explore AI's capabilities in identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks.
  • To develop a conceptual model or framework that integrates AI into existing systems safety processes.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed AI-enhanced framework through case studies or simulations.

Proposed Methodology

  • Literature Review: Conduct a comprehensive review of existing frameworks and methods for systems safety and identify their strengths and limitations.
  • AI Capability Analysis: Investigate different AI technologies (e.g., machine learning, natural language processing, and predictive analytics) and their potential applications within systems safety.
  • Framework Development: Design a conceptual model that integrates AI into traditional systems safety frameworks, illustrating how AI can enhance the phases of the systems safety process.
  • Validation: Apply the proposed model to real-world case studies or simulations to assess its effectiveness in improving safety outcomes.

  • A detailed understanding of the current state of systems safety frameworks and their limitations.
  • Insights into how AI can be utilized to improve systems safety processes.

Scope

Thesis project of 30 credits (full-time 20 weeks). Suitable for two students.

Location

Our unit has offices in Växjö, Linköping, and Stockholm. The thesis work offers flexibility to work from the office or remotely. A hybrid solution is also possible.

Who You Are

  • Engineering or a related technical field: Understanding technical systems and their safety implications is essential.
  • Research and analytical skills: The ability to conduct literature reviews, analyze data, and develop innovative solutions is crucial.
  • Concepts and techniques of artificial intelligence: Knowledge of machine learning, data analysis, and AI applications in safety-critical areas is highly advantageous.
  • Strong communication and writing skills: Clearly articulating complex technical concepts in a concise and understandable manner is important for both the thesis and potential presentations.

Given that the position involves work that is subject to defense secrecy, you are required to undergo and pass a security clearance.
