About this role

The primary duty of the Swedish Armed Forces is to defend Sweden and allied states against armed aggression. The Environmental Assessment Section contributes to this by creating conditions for the Armed Forces to fulfill its main mission. The main task of the Environmental Assessment Section is to lead and implement the authority's work regarding contaminated areas and to handle cases related to the permit assessment of the Armed Forces' environmentally hazardous activities. The Armed Forces is currently in a growth phase, in which the section plays a significant role, including through the permitting assessment of environmentally hazardous activities and the investigation of potential historical contamination at new establishment sites. The Environmental Assessment Section is a shared resource across the Armed Forces and has its operational area nationwide. Our section consists of 25 positions with diverse competencies, including project coordinators, legal experts, administrators, and financial officers. Here, you will have a unique opportunity to contribute concretely to environmental work in Sweden while also helping to create conditions for the Armed Forces' main mission. Main Responsibilities As the Deputy Section Chief, you will have both strategic and operational leadership responsibilities, working alongside other employees and managers in the department. You will lead employees in parallel with development work and be responsible for parts of operations and staff that lead and implement the work with the section's various deliverables. Good collaboration between you and the section chief will be an important prerequisite for the section's success. Additionally, the role includes staff work and processing within the framework of the agency's administration, management, and governance. We have close collaboration with other parts of the Armed Forces and with the Swedish Fortifications Agency, as well as with other authorities and stakeholders. REQUIREMENTS Qualifications • Academic degree in environmental or natural sciences (or a relevant field as assessed by the employer) • Experience as a manager with personnel responsibility • Excellent written and oral communication skills in Swedish and English • Valid category B driver’s license Personal Attributes We are looking for someone who is proactive, has strong analytical skills with an awareness of the big picture and consequences. DESIRABLE • Reserve officer training and experience within the Armed Forces • Good knowledge of the Armed Forces' operations and leadership structure • Good understanding of the environmental impact of the Armed Forces' activities • Experience leading managers, both at direct and indirect levels • Experience with permitting assessments of environmentally hazardous activities and/or contaminated areas, preferably related to the Armed Forces or defense-related activities For the agency's mission to be successful, all employees are expected to act according to the established values. The Armed Forces' Environmental Assessment Section is located at the Communications Regiment in Enköping but functionally led by Headquarters in Stockholm. As of January 1, 2026, the Environmental Assessment Section will also be organizationally transferred to Headquarters but will still be located at the Communications Regiment in Enköping.
