About this role

Are you passionate about making a difference for students in need of special support? Are you a trained or aspiring special education teacher? At Berzeliusskolan, you'll help create a safe school environment where each student can develop to their fullest potential. Welcome to our team! Your Responsibilities As a special education teacher at Berzeliusskolan, you will teach in the adapted high school's individualized program. Classes consist of approximately 5-8 students with intellectual disabilities, and sometimes additional diagnoses such as autism, sensory, or physical impairments. You will teach six subject areas based on the curriculum for adapted high school. Teaching and developing students' language and communication, as well as promoting their participation and independence, are central to the role. Using digital tools is a natural part of your instruction. In your work, you are expected to take responsibility for assessing students' abilities to meet them where they are, with the goal of helping each student reach their maximum learning and development potential. You will create support plans as needed, drawing from scientific foundations and proven experience. You will plan, implement, and evaluate lessons and student goal achievement. You will collaborate with fellow special education teachers and classroom teaching assistants. Beyond teaching, the role includes mentorship, involving student welfare work, parent communication, and coordinating with other professionals such as habilitation services, after-school programs, short-term residences, and transportation. As a special education teacher with us, you will be responsible for your own class and function as a mentor. You will lead teaching assistants in daily work and collaborate closely to develop instruction and create the best possible support for each student. Your Workplace Berzeliusskolan is centrally located in Linköping's Vasastaden district, within walking distance of the Central Station. Our adapted high school has approximately 90 students in individual and national programs. We have about 85 employees working together to provide our students with the best possible support and development. Students have varying degrees of intellectual disability, from severe impairments with significant care needs to moderate disabilities and sometimes additional challenges. Our goal is to create a safe and inspiring learning environment where each student can develop independently and socially, academically, and in daily life skills. Our students have diverse needs, requiring you to be flexible and experienced in adapting instruction for each individual. We have a strong student health team (EHT) with counselors, psychologists, nurses, special education teachers, and principals who work closely with classroom special education teachers. At Berzeliusskolan, we cultivate a learning culture. We have regular class meetings, check-ins, and teacher meetings every week. Professional development is a natural part of our work and is highly prioritized. You will have opportunities for continuous training, including sign language support and other special education development, which we consider a significant benefit. We are seeking a qualified special education teacher, someone near graduation, or with the right background and commitment to our student group. For the right candidate, there are opportunities to train as a special education teacher with us. Candidate Profile We primarily seek candidates with preschool or early years teaching certification and a special education degree focusing on intellectual disabilities. Alternatively, we welcome those about to complete their special education certification. You should have previous experience working with students with intellectual disabilities, preferably with experience in autism. You naturally employ a low-arousal approach. Experience with alternative communication methods, visual supports, sign language support, and technical aids is essential. We value experience supporting students with care or medical needs, combining learning support with personalized care. You have a positive attitude and bring enthusiasm and energy to work. You excel at creating participation and maintaining workplace relationships. You understand how people acquire knowledge and can adapt your communication style. You communicate clearly, are responsible, and drive processes forward. You are self-assured, remain calm under stress, and use a low-arousal approach with challenging student behaviors. You are flexible, solution-oriented, and adept at seeing the big picture and various perspectives.
