About this role

The Swedish Prison and Probation Service is expanding – we are building new facilities, renovating existing ones, and seeking additional staff. Our foremost goal is to reduce recidivism – to break the cycle of crime. If we succeed, society will be safer and more secure for everyone. We are the authority responsible for prisons, probation, remand facilities, and client transportation. The northern probation service covers the counties of Västernorrland, Västerbotten, and Norrbotten and has staffed offices in Luleå, Gällivare, Umeå, and Sundsvall. The probation service conducts personal assessments and supervises clients who are conditionally released, are under protective supervision, or have been sentenced to community service or monitored through electronic ankle bracelets/intensive supervision. The probation service also works with various treatment programs, including on-site programs at nearby facilities in Umeå and Sundsvall. Approximately 180 staff members and 10 managers work within the northern probation service to reduce clients’ recidivism and, in turn, enhance public safety. The employment begins with a local introduction at the workplace, followed by a program leader training starting in March 2026. **JOB DESCRIPTION** As a program leader, you will be part of a team working with clients under probation and in prisons. A crucial part of the work to prevent recidivism, the Sundsvall probation service conducts extensive program activities for supervised clients, both in groups and individually. The treatment programs are delivered with high quality and according to the principles of evidence-based practice. They primarily focus on cognitive behavioral therapy and social learning theory. We use programs addressing crime, violence, substance abuse, as well as sexual and relational violence. The assignments are carried out by a highly engaged program team with special program leadership skills, and we are now seeking new staff members for this group. The diverse program offerings mean that you will lead multiple programs concurrently, predominantly in groups both in probation and in prison. In the role of program leader, you will not only lead programs but also engage in administrative tasks. Furthermore, you are expected to complete the program leader training and any relevant programs included in the assignment. You will perform your duties at both the probation offices in Sundsvall and Härnösand as well as at our nearby facilities and in surrounding municipalities, which requires some travel. It is essential in this role to work diligently for good cooperation with both other program leaders and staff at prisons and within probation. **QUALIFICATIONS** We are looking for someone who is calm and controlled in demanding situations, as well as secure, stable, and with good self-awareness. Since you will be working in a team and leading group programs, a well-developed ability to collaborate is required. In your work, you are meticulous and make accurate assessments and priorities. You have a good understanding of how individuals absorb knowledge and adapt your way of communicating messages to suit the recipient's circumstances. You communicate clearly and ensure that your messages are delivered. It is also important that you possess the physical ability to act if the situation demands it. It is crucial for us that you share the foundational values of the Swedish Prison and Probation Service regarding a humane view of people, respect for the individual, and a belief in the human will and capacity to develop. You are also aware of and understand how background, culture, and group affiliations impact yourself and others. Moreover, you are expected to contribute to equitable treatment of all individuals through your approach. We place great emphasis on personal suitability.
