The new department represents a clear and strategic focus in the environmental field, with strong connections to interdisciplinary research areas and collaboration with society, industry, and academia, both nationally and internationally. Here, competencies and infrastructures are gathered to support new research initiatives, strengthen education, and develop solutions to some of our time's greatest challenges. We are now seeking someone who wants to lead and develop the department together with committed colleagues, in line with Chalmers' strategy and vision to become a globally leading technical university. About the Role As head of the department, you will lead the establishment and continued development of the new department. You will have a central role with overall responsibility for the department's strategic and operational activities. Your mission is to create a well-functioning organization with a clear management structure, sustainable resource allocation, and defined areas of responsibility. You will inspire and lead strategic initiatives in research, education, and utilization, ensure high quality, and work to strengthen the department's position both nationally and internationally. An important part of the assignment is to build a strong, attractive, and inclusive environment for employees, students, and collaboration partners. It is important that you lead from a holistic perspective and promote strong collaboration between the different areas of activity: energy conversion, environmental and sustainability assessment, environmental observation, and system transformation. Together, these areas contribute to new knowledge and methods for addressing our time's major environmental challenges. You will report directly to the Chalmers Rector and become part of Chalmers' management team, playing a central role in realizing the university's 20-year vision: Chalmers vision and strategy. Together with deputy heads and division heads, you will develop the department's academic activities. Together with the administrative manager and the department's operational support, you will participate in both daily operational work and the development of nearby and department-wide support. Your responsibilities include: • Building and promoting a strong and dynamic academic environment, with excellence in research, education, and utilization. • Creating opportunities for collaboration within Chalmers and with industry, other universities, and society at a national and international level. • Ensuring an inclusive, stimulating, and positive work environment for all staff • Ensuring strong leadership throughout the department through division heads. • Responsibility for budget, personnel, and recruitment processes. To succeed in the role, we see that you have: • A doctoral degree in a relevant field and a broad interest in research within environment and energy, to be able to support the department's varied activities. • Experience and deep understanding of research, higher education, and societal engagement. • Experience in strategically developing academic and/or research environments. • Leadership and management experience, including personnel responsibility and strategic planning. • A willingness to actively promote an equal, diverse, and inclusive work environment. • Economic and administrative skills, including experience with budget work and resource allocation, and understanding of research funding structures. • Good communication skills, with the ability to adapt to different target groups with different needs and contexts, and colleagues with different cultural backgrounds. • Interest and understanding of the department's scientific breadth and the ability to represent the entire operation both internally and externally. • You communicate fluently in English, both verbally and in writing, and (if you do not currently speak Swedish) have an ambition to learn Swedish. Meritorious for the role: • Academic merits at associate professor or professor level. • Knowledge of the Swedish language. • Experience in researcher supervision and leading research, preferably both theoretical and experimental. • Experience from educational organizations and university administration. • Experience in developing international collaborations. • Experience in leading managers. • Leadership training. • Experience in change management. • Experience with research infrastructure. • We especially welcome candidates with international experience.
