The Swedish National Defence University trains Sweden's military officers and leads the academic development of the officer profession. We conduct research in law focusing on operational law and international law, defense systems, war science, leadership and management, military history, and political science. The Department of Leadership and Management (ILL) is seeking a postdoctoral researcher in leadership and management, focusing on leadership and collaboration within total defense. The department employs around fifty teachers and researchers, both civilian and military, across departments in Stockholm and Karlstad. The position is located at ILL in Stockholm. Description of Leadership and Management Leadership and management is the scientific study of leading, that is, the actions taken to direct, coordinate resources, and influence an individual or group to achieve a common goal. The field focuses on individual, organizational, and inter-organizational factors that contribute to processes leading to achieving shared objectives. Leadership and management are empirically grounded in the needs and challenges typical and somewhat common to actors and operations within defense, crisis management, and security. Leadership and management is a social science that draws and develops knowledge from behavioral and design sciences. The field studies issues related to the significance of stressful conditions, leadership and management theory, leadership development, collaboration, crisis management, design of management systems, team issues, and selection. The field also shows great interest in gender, methodological, and ethical issues. Research Environment Description ILL is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher in leadership and management, focusing on leadership and collaboration within total defense. The position is part of a research project that focuses on how leadership and collaboration are exercised within the Swedish total defense system and similar international systems. The project particularly emphasizes the interaction between leadership and collaboration and how it is influenced by different institutional and organizational contexts. Job Responsibilities The primary task is to contribute to the research project by conducting independent research and collaborative research with other project members. Responsibilities include disseminating knowledge by publishing scientific articles and presenting research results, for example, at international conferences. The position includes up to 20% teaching. Who Are We Looking For? You should: • Have a doctoral degree or a foreign degree deemed equivalent in a subject relevant to the project. Significant weight will be placed on the degree's relevance to the research project. Candidates who have completed their doctoral degree within the last three years will be prioritized. • Be able to independently conduct research within the project framework • Have good knowledge in the research area. Knowledge of civil-military collaboration is meritorious. • Be able to communicate research results to the broader society • Have advanced language skills in both Swedish and English We seek someone with excellent collaboration skills, high social competence, and who thrives in meeting new people. About the Position This is a fixed-term full-time position for two years with the possibility of a one-year extension depending on funding. A position at the Swedish National Defence University may involve a security screening for placement in a security class, which includes register checks and, in some cases, a security interview with the Swedish Security Service. The position may involve wartime placement. If you are already wartime placed in your current position at an authority and your competence is needed in the Swedish National Defence University's war organization, negotiations will occur between the concerned authority and the Swedish National Defence University regarding your placement.
