About this role

**Description** The Department of Chemistry - Ångström conducts research and education in the field of chemistry. The department has 270 employees and a turnover of 300 million SEK. Within the department's six programs, highly successful research of international caliber is conducted. We have a large number of externally funded research projects, often involving international collaboration, and we anticipate continued strong growth in our field. The department is responsible for educational programs in engineering and master's programs. More information can be found on our website: https://kemi.uu.se/angstrom. **Responsibilities** The project focuses on designing and creating new high-entropy alloys for use as electrodes in both lithium and sodium-ion batteries. The goal is to increase storage capacity, both by weight and volume, as well as to mitigate the pulverization that commonly occurs due to volume changes associated with the charging and discharging of the active material through an intrinsic buffering effect. The overarching aim is to design new materials and optimize fundamental battery performance, while also achieving a greater mechanistic understanding. The methods primarily involve synthesis, material characterization, as well as constructing electrochemical cells and testing them. The postdoctoral researcher will join Prof. Patrik Johansson's new research group at Uppsala University, which is part of the Ångström Advanced Battery Centre (ÅABC). This applied and innovation-focused project is mainly funded by the Swedish Research Council as part of a Council Professorship grant for "Next Generation Batteries." The project is closely linked to activities at Luleå University and Chalmers. The main tasks will involve conducting research. They may also include teaching, up to 20% of the working time, as well as supervising and collaborating with PhD students and thesis workers. **Qualifications** A PhD in chemistry or materials science, or a foreign degree assessed to be equivalent. The degree must be obtained by the time of the employment decision. Typically, the degree should have been obtained within the last three years, counted from the last application date. However, in special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. Special circumstances include leave due to illness, parental leave, trust assignments within trade unions, and similar situations. Applications will primarily be assessed based on the applicant's ability to conduct independent research and their scientific competence. The quality of each individual scientific work carries more weight than the number of publications. Consideration will also be given to good collaboration skills, drive, and independence, as well as how the applicant's experience and competence complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department and how they can contribute to its future development. The applicant must have excellent written and spoken English skills and experience in the synthesis and analysis of high-entropy alloys. **Desirable/meritorious** Experience with X-ray diffraction methods, battery material development, and testing is meritorious. **Conditions** The position is temporary for 2 years, with the possibility of a 1-year extension, according to central agreement. The scope is 100%. Start date is by agreement. Location: Uppsala. For inquiries about the position, please contact: Torbjörn Fängström, +46 18-471 33 65, [email protected]. Welcome with your application by December 5, 2025, UFV-PA 2025/3524. Uppsala University is a broad research university with a strong international standing.
