Postdoctoral Researcher in Extreme Weather Event Effects
Are you interested in researching the effects of extreme weather events, supported by competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Do you want an employer committed to sustainable employee development and offering secure, beneficial working conditions? Welcome to apply for a postdoctoral position at Uppsala University.
The Department of Earth Sciences is one of Europe's most comprehensive geoscientific departments with approximately 300 employees. Our activities are interdisciplinary, combining natural sciences and technology with social sciences. We have research programs in air, water, and landscape studies; geophysics; natural resources and sustainable development; mineralogy, petrology, and tectonics; paleobiology and wind energy. By studying Earth's history, we understand how the planet has developed and how our pursuit of sustainable development can benefit from this knowledge.
The Air, Water, and Landscape Science Program (LUVAL) brings together research and education in meteorology, hydrology, environmental analysis, and physical geography.
The Swedish Center for Extreme Climate Events (climes) is a collaboration between Uppsala University, Lund University, and RISE. The center is the core of an interdisciplinary scientific network, aiming to organize various recurring meetings, international exchanges, and educational events. The center also hosts multiple national and international research projects focusing on the effects of extreme climate events: from economic losses to ecosystem impacts and societal and public health effects. Positions at the center offer great freedom to develop individual research ideas, generous funding for international stays within the center's network, opportunities to propose leading foreign experts for research visits to Sweden, and a strong focus on career development.
Job Responsibilities
You will work within the Swedish Center for Extreme Climate Events (climes). You will work on data collection and/or analysis of extreme weather event effects at mid-latitudes. Within this framework, there is significant freedom to focus on specific topics or analysis methods. Teaching may be included up to 20%. You will be based at the Department of Earth Sciences in Uppsala but are expected to travel both within and outside Sweden.
Qualification Requirements
PhD in climate science, meteorology, disaster studies, physics, applied mathematics, statistics, computer science, or related disciplines, or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a PhD in these fields. The degree must be completed by the time of the employment decision. Preference will be given to candidates who have obtained their degree within the last three years. Special circumstances (such as parental leave, illness, or union responsibilities) may be considered for candidates who earned their degree earlier.
We seek a driven, independent, and initiative-taking candidate who enjoys developing and testing new ideas. You should demonstrate the ability to communicate your research efficiently through peer-reviewed articles in leading international academic journals and have excellent verbal and written English skills. Good collaboration abilities are essential, as the work involves collaborations with various international research circles and centers.
Desirable/Advantageous Qualifications
Previous experience with large climate data analysis and extreme weather work is highly advantageous. We value high-quality publications in international peer-reviewed journals.
Application Should Include:
- Curriculum Vitae
- Short research report (max. 2 pages) describing how the applicant's previous experience is relevant to the center's work
- List of publications in international peer-reviewed journals
- Two references (names and complete contact details, including phone numbers)
