About this role

The Department of Linguistics and Philology conducts research and education in the fields of linguistic science and text studies, focusing on the languages and cultures of Asia, classical languages of Europe, linguistics, and computational linguistics. Education is offered at the undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels. The department has around seventy employees, who, along with students and partners, create an international and intellectually vibrant environment. **Job Responsibilities** The main tasks consist of independent research and developing applications for external research grants within the area of language documentation and description. The role also includes collaborating with other researchers and educators to contribute to the development of the department's scientific environment. In addition, teaching and supervision of students may comprise up to 20% of a full-time position. The successful candidate is expected to primarily reside at the workplace in Uppsala. **Qualifications** To be eligible for a postdoctoral position, candidates must have obtained a doctoral degree or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a doctoral degree in a field relevant to the job responsibilities. The degree should be awarded or in its final stages at the time of application. The degree must be completed at the time of the employment decision, but no more than three years prior to the end of the application period unless there are exceptional reasons. Exceptional reasons include time off due to illness, parental leave, union representative duties, or other similar circumstances. Documented competence as a researcher in the areas of language documentation and description is also required. Proficiency in English, both spoken and written, is an additional requirement. The applicant should possess personal qualities necessary to fulfill the position effectively. **Selection Criteria** In selecting from qualified applicants, particular emphasis will be placed on scientific excellence and originality. The extent, depth, and breadth of the applicant’s prior work will be significant. Consideration will also be given to how well the research plan clarifies how the proposed research builds on the applicant’s previous work and how it can complement and enhance the department's research environment. Projects related to one or more of the department's other main areas will be regarded as valuable. These areas include Greek and Byzantine Studies, Indology, Iranian Languages, Linguistics, Latin, Semitic Languages, Sinology, and Turkic Languages. As teaching may be part of the role, documented teaching qualifications will also be taken into account. The university will mainly consider the candidate who, after a holistic evaluation of documented qualifications, competence, and skills, is deemed best suited to carry out the current job responsibilities and contribute positively to the development of the department. **Application Requirements** The application must include: - A research plan of no more than three pages (excluding references) - A CV - A copy of the applicant’s doctoral thesis or a draft thereof - Copies of relevant degrees - Other relevant publications - Any additional documents referred to **About the Position** The employment is temporary for two years according to a central collective agreement.
