About this role

Are you interested in working with the higher structure of symmetries and their applications in quantum field theories, alongside competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Would you like an employer that focuses on sustainable employee relationships and offers secure and beneficial working conditions? Welcome to apply for a postdoctoral position at Uppsala University. The position is located at the Department of Mathematics at Uppsala University. The department conducts research and teaching across a broad spectrum of mathematical areas, from pure mathematics to applied mathematics and mathematical physics. It offers a vibrant international research environment with active seminars, research groups, and opportunities for collaboration both within the university and with leading research centers worldwide. For more information about the Department of Mathematics, please visit https://www.uu.se/institution/matematiska/. The postdoctoral researcher will also be affiliated with the Centre for Geometry and Physics, where researchers from mathematics and theoretical physics meet in a dynamic, interdisciplinary environment. The centre offers a stimulating research environment with excellent opportunities for collaboration and exchange of ideas across disciplinary boundaries. For more information about the Centre for Geometry and Physics, please visit https://www.uu.se/en/centre/geometry-and-physics. Work Tasks You will work on topics related to the ERC project "The Higher Structure of Symmetries" under the supervision of Dr. Michele Del Zotto, at the intersection of the geometry and physics research group at the Department of Mathematics and the theoretical physics research group at the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Work tasks include collaboration with group members and development and publication of research results. Qualification Requirements PhD in mathematics or theoretical physics, or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a PhD in mathematics or theoretical physics. The degree must be completed by the time the employment decision is made. Preference will be given to those who have completed their degree within the last three years. The calculation of the three-year timeframe is based on the application deadline. If there are special reasons, such a degree may have been completed earlier. Special reasons include leave due to illness, parental leave, union assignments, etc. Particular importance will be placed on documented experience in one or more of the following areas: quantum field theories, lattice models, non-perturbative methods, topological quantum field theories, topological orders, and defects in quantum field theories. The ability to conduct independent research, analytical thinking, and collaboration in an international environment are required. Excellent English skills, both spoken and written, are mandatory. Desirable/Meritorious Experience working in interdisciplinary environments or at the intersection of mathematics and theoretical physics is meritorious. Application Procedure Answer the three questions in the application portal and include the following attachments in PDF format: - CV; - A research plan (2 pages + 1 extra page for references; longer texts will not be considered). About the Position The position is time-limited to two years, with the possibility of a third year depending on satisfactory performance and available funding, according to central collective agreement. Full-time employment. Start date: September 1, 2026, or by agreement. Location: Uppsala.
