About this role

The Department of Linguistics and Philology conducts research and education in linguistics and text studies with a focus on Asian languages and cultures, the classical languages of Europe, linguistics, and computational linguistics. Education is offered at the undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels. The department has around seventy employees who, together with students and partners, create an international and intellectually vibrant environment. Job Responsibilities The main responsibilities consist of conducting independent research and preparing applications for external research funding in the field of multilingual language technology. Multilingual language technology refers to computer-based models that can handle multiple natural languages. This may involve tasks that are inherently multilingual, such as machine translation and cross-linguistic information retrieval, as well as the use of pooled resources from several languages to enable various language technology applications such as question-answering systems and text summarization. Research in multilingual language technology currently focuses mainly on large language models trained on multiple languages. Open research questions include how to train models effectively and purposefully, how to reliably evaluate models across a wide range of languages, and how to understand the processes through which linguistic information is encoded and shared between languages in the models. A particular question is how multilingual models can be utilized to support languages where data availability is limited. The applicant is expected to present a plan for the direction and execution of the work. Responsibilities also include collaborating with other researchers and teachers to contribute to the development of the department's scientific environment. Additionally, teaching and supervision may comprise up to 20% of full-time employment. The holder is expected to allocate their main working hours to the workplace in Uppsala. Qualifications To be eligible for employment as a postdoctoral researcher, a candidate must hold a PhD or a foreign degree assessed to be equivalent to a PhD in a relevant subject for the tasks. The degree must be obtained or in its final stage at the time of application. It should be conferred by the time of the employment decision, but no more than three years prior to the application deadline unless there are special reasons. Special reasons include leave due to illness, parental leave, duties in trade union organizations, or other similar circumstances. Documented competence as a researcher in the field of multilingual language technology is also a requirement. Good proficiency in English, both spoken and written, is an additional requirement. The applicant should also possess the personal characteristics necessary to perform the responsibilities well. Selection In the selection process among qualified candidates, particular importance will be placed on scientific proficiency and originality. The scope, depth, and breadth of the candidate's previous work will be significant factors. There will also be considerable consideration given to how well the research plan clarifies how the proposed research effort builds on the candidate’s previous work and how it can complement and strengthen the department's research environment. Projects related to one or more of the department's main areas will be considered particularly valuable. These areas include Greek and Byzantine studies, Indology, Iranian languages, linguistics, Latin, Semitic languages, Sinology, and Turkic languages. Since teaching may be involved, documented teaching qualifications will also be taken into account. The university will primarily consider those candidates who, after an overall assessment of documented qualifications, competence, and skills, are deemed to have the best prospects of performing the tasks and contributing to the positive development of the operations. Application should include: - a research plan of no more than three pages (excluding references) - a CV - a copy of the applicant's doctoral thesis or a draft of it - copies of relevant degrees - other relevant publications - any other documents referenced About the Position The position is limited in time to two years according to the central collective agreement.
