Luleå University of Technology is experiencing strong growth with world-leading expertise in several research areas. We shape the future through innovative education and groundbreaking research results, and by drawing on the Arctic region, we create global societal benefits. Our scientific and artistic research and education are conducted in close collaboration with international, national, and regional companies, public actors, and leading universities. Luleå University of Technology has a total turnover of nearly 2.1 billion SEK per year. We currently have 1,900 employees and 18,700 students. In the coming years, billions will be invested in Norrbotten and Västerbotten through major projects aimed at creating a more sustainable society both nationally and globally. Luleå University of Technology is involved in several of these highly relevant research projects and the societal transformation that follows. We offer a wide range of educational programs to match the demanded skills. We hope you will help us build the sustainable companies and societies of the future. The Applied Geophysics Research Group is part of the Division of Geoscience and Environmental Technology at the Department of Civil, Environmental and Natural Resources Engineering at Luleå University of Technology. The department consists of approximately 400 employees, with research conducted in geoscience, geotechnical engineering, mining, metallurgy, and civil engineering. The department has well-developed collaborations with research institutes, industrial partners, and authorities. The environment is open and dynamic, bringing together researchers from around fifty different nationalities and students from around the world. This three-year postdoctoral position is within the Applied Geophysics Research Group, one of the world's longest-operating groups continuously active in mineral exploration and geoelectromagnetic studies. Subject Description Applied Geophysics involves studying how the laws and methods of physics can be used to understand the properties of bedrock and loose sediments. This includes developing and applying methods for exploring and investigating natural resources such as mineral deposits and water, as well as addressing environmental and infrastructure-related issues. Project Description This two-year position is part of a project to develop a new method for high-frequency electromagnetic (ground-penetrating radar or controlled-source electromagnetic CSEM) data modeling based on full-wave 3D inversion to expand our expertise in characterizing and monitoring near-surface infrastructure, cavities/settlements, mine waste, groundwater contamination, and stormwater infiltration processes. Job Responsibilities Primary tasks include: - Developing software for high-frequency 3D electromagnetic modeling and inversion; - Collecting 3D ground-penetrating radar or CSEM measurement data, data processing, and 3D inversion; - Writing articles and conference presentations; - Contributing to geophysics teaching (up to 4 hours per week). Qualifications To be eligible for the postdoctoral position, you must have a doctoral degree or a foreign equivalent in geophysics. A doctoral degree obtained within the last three years is meritorious. Candidates who completed their doctoral degree earlier may also be considered if there are special reasons, such as various types of statutory leave. Competency Requirements: Strong programming skills (FORTRAN95, C++ or Python) and experience in developing high-frequency 2D or 3D ground-penetrating radar or transient electromagnetic modeling and inversion codes are essential. A good publication history is desirable. Additional Information Full-time, time-limited employment for two years (up to a maximum of 3 years) located in Luleå. Start date: May 2026.
