About this role

Join us at the Division of Astronomy and Plasma Physics, Department of Space, Earth and Environment, and help advance our understanding of galaxy evolution and supermassive black hole growth. Do you want to contribute to groundbreaking research on how galaxies form, evolve, and interact across cosmic time? We are offering an exciting postdoctoral opportunity within the Division of Astronomy and Plasma Physics at Chalmers University of Technology. This position focuses on the study of obscured galaxy evolution, outflows, galaxy interactions, and the growth of supermassive black holes in both the local and distant universe. You will join a vibrant and collaborative research environment that combines observations, theory, and data-intensive methods to explore key processes shaping galaxies and their central black holes. Become part of our innovative team and contribute to cutting-edge astrophysical research within a stimulating and dynamic scientific community. About us Research at the Department of Space, Earth and Environment (SEE) addresses fundamental scientific topics. On the one hand, we focus on basic science related to the origins of the universe, our planet, and life. On the other, we observe what is happening on Earth today and develop methods, tools, and models that enable us to look towards the future and find solutions to global challenges regarding resources, energy supply, and environmental impact. The research in the Division of Astronomy and Plasma Physics (AoP) covers a wide range of topics, including evolved stars, interstellar medium, astrochemistry, star and planet formation, exoplanets, observational cosmology, galaxy formation and evolution, and galaxy clusters. The activities of AoP are situated at the main Johanneberg Campus and at the Onsala Space Observatory (OSO), which is the Swedish national facility for Radio Astronomy. The observatory operates telescopes in Sweden, shares in the APEX telescope in Chile, and hosts the Nordic ALMA Regional Center (ARC). About the position Applications are invited for: Two postdoctoral positions linked to the research project “Feeding and feedback in the dark hearts of galaxies,” funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation (PI: S. Aalto). In the project, we use multi-wavelength techniques, including recently developed mm and submm observational methods, to reach into the dark hearts of dusty galaxies. New machine learning techniques are applied to study nuclear evolution and galaxy-SMBH co-evolution. We are seeking 2 ambitious, highly-qualified postdoctoral researchers with experience in any of the following areas: 1. mm/submm/radio interferometric studies of nearby and/or distant galaxies, AGNs, and starbursts 2. Optical and IR studies of host galaxy properties 3. 3D radiative transfer modeling 4. Galactic dynamics, outflows, and feedback 5. Numerical techniques for modeling galaxy evolution, machine learning, and AI techniques The research team is part of the growing and vibrant research environment encompassing the Chalmers Division for Astronomy and Plasma Physics and the Onsala Space Observatory – host of the Swedish National Facility for Radio Astronomy, which is also the location of the Nordic ALMA Regional Center Node. Our team is also active in a number of international collaborations. Who we are looking for The following requirements are mandatory: • To qualify for these postdoctoral positions, you must have a Ph.D. in astronomy or a relevant field and a demonstrated potential for research. • To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must hold a doctoral degree awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline*. • You will need strong written and verbal communication skills in English. You are expected to be somewhat accustomed to teaching and to demonstrate good potential within research and education. *The date on your doctoral degree certificate is considered the official date of completion. Exceptions to the three-year eligibility limit may be made for documented circumstances such as parental leave, sick leave, or military service. What you will do • Your major responsibility as postdoc is to perform your research in the research group of S. Aalto and collaborators. • The position might also include opportunities for small fractions of time teaching at the undergraduate and master's levels as well as supervising master's and/or PhD students. • Another important aspect involves collaboration within academia and with society at large. The position is meritorious for future roles in academia, industry, or the public sector. Contract terms The position is a temporary full-time employment for two years with the possibility of a one-year extension. The position requires physical presence throughout the entire employment. A valid residence permit must be presented by the start date; otherwise, the offer may be withdrawn. What we offer • As a postdoc at Chalmers, you are an employee and enjoy all employee benefits. Read more about working at Chalmers and our benefits for employees. • A dynamic and inspiring working environment in the coastal city of Gothenburg. • Read more about Sweden’s generous parental leave, subsidized daycare, free schools,
