About this role

The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology (IMBIM) at Uppsala University provides a broad international environment for research and education. At IMBIM, fundamental research is conducted in biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, tumor biology, comparative genetics, functional genomics, immunology, bacteriology, and virology. A more detailed description can be found at https://www.uu.se/institution/medicinsk-biokemi-och-mikrobiologi/forskning. **Job Responsibilities** The main responsibilities include research on molecular mechanisms in the field of asthma. The work involves various methods to study the role of mast cells in asthma. Among other things, the effects of mast cell proteases on primary lung cells will be investigated. The work will also include new methods to induce selective apoptosis in mast cells. The position will involve the cultivation of primary cells as well as several techniques to study the effects of different substances on lung cells and mast cells, such as fluorescence microscopy, live imaging, flow cytometry, and various cell biological and biochemical techniques. Other tasks at the department, such as some teaching, may be included to a lesser extent. **Qualifications** A PhD in immunology or equivalent, with extensive experience in experimental laboratory work. The PhD must be completed by the time the employment decision is made. Preference will be given to candidates who obtained their degree no more than three years ago. In calculating the three-year timeframe, the deadline for applications will be the starting point. If there are special reasons, the degree may have been obtained earlier. Special reasons include leave due to illness, parental leave, or elected positions within trade unions, etc. The work requires documented experience in cell culture, as well as experience with various immunological and cell biological techniques such as flow cytometry, qPCR, Western blot, cell staining, and microscopy. The applicant must demonstrate the ability to work independently and collaborate with other members of the group as well as with national and international partners. Excellent proficiency in English, both spoken and written, is required. Personal qualities such as flexibility, attention to detail, and teamwork skills are valued. **Assessment Criteria** In the selection among qualified applicants, particular emphasis will be placed on scientific competence. The university will primarily consider those who, after a comprehensive assessment of documented qualifications, skills, and abilities, are deemed to have the best conditions to carry out and develop the relevant tasks and contribute to a positive development of the operations. **About the Employment** The position is temporary for two years according to the central collective agreement, with a possibility of extension.
