Finnish, Yiddish, Meänkieli, Romani Chib, and Sámi are national minority languages in Sweden.
Students belonging to any of the national minorities have the right to education in their mother tongue, regardless of whether it is a living language at home or not. This means that the student has the right to study the language even if it is a beginner's language.
Umeå Municipality WANTS MORE when it comes to the development of education in national minority languages, with a particular focus on preschool and younger children. An extensive development project is underway aimed at finding successful language models for teaching in and on the national minority language for both first and second language learners.
We are now looking for someone who wants to contribute to our students' continued development of their language, culture, and identity!
Employment Type
The position is a temporary contract starting from February 2, 2026, until June 17, 2026. If you are available for in-person teaching, we offer a part-time employment rate of 20%. If you are instead interested in remote teaching, we offer a part-time employment rate of 10%.
Your Responsibilities
As a mother tongue teacher, you will teach students from preschool to grade 9 alongside other mother tongue teachers. The teaching consists of 120 minutes per week and follows the Swedish curriculum.
Your role may include the following tasks:
- Plan, implement, and follow up on teaching in the relevant language
- Assess and grade in accordance with applicable governing documents
- Teach students both in-person and through remote teaching (if needed)
- Contribute to the development of education based on our core values: language, culture, and identity
- Collaborate with colleagues within our Language Hub for national minority languages
Teaching takes place at the student’s home school from preschool to grade 3. From grade 4, teaching may occur at a different school – in which case we offer bus passes if needed. Remote teaching may occur from grade 2, especially in rural areas.
About You
We are looking for someone who is creative, self-driven, and flexible, and who thrives in a dynamic work environment. Furthermore, you have good collaboration skills, are attentive, and can communicate and handle various situations in a constructive and solution-oriented manner. Requirements
- Good knowledge of Ume Sámi in spoken and written form
- Approved Swedish B/Swedish 2
- Good digital skills
- Educational training and/or pedagogical experience
- Valid extract from the criminal record, in accordance with the suitability control law
Meritorious
- Knowledge of additional languages
