**JOB DESCRIPTION**
In the role of school social worker, the goal is to support students in their development towards academic goals and to foster their social growth in an environment that promotes learning. The student health team and school social worker primarily work in a promotional and preventive capacity. The school social worker assists students facing difficulties in social situations both in and out of school that hinder their ability to succeed academically. The school social worker addresses issues related to peer difficulties, bullying, absenteeism, and conflicts. The social worker collaborates with and can provide information about other support services available in the community.
The principal is the immediate supervisor of the school social worker, who is part of a work team alongside other functions within student health.
Tasks for the psychosocial intervention may include:
- Contributing psychosocial expertise to pedagogical work and the overall planning of the student health team's initiatives.
- Providing knowledge about protective and risk factors affecting students' learning, development, and health in collaboration with students, guardians, and other staff.
- Offering guidance and consultation to educational staff.
- Assessing and analyzing the needs of students and the school, proposing and implementing health-promoting and preventive measures, as well as evaluating and developing these initiatives.
- Conducting discussions with individual students related to school situations, such as support and motivational conversations, as well as investigative and advisory meetings to provide knowledge about the support systems in society.
- At the principal's request, investigating and assessing the social and psychosocial situations of individual students, especially before decisions concerning special support and the development of action plans, as well as before decisions regarding admission to adapted primary or secondary schools.
- Participating in the organization of the school's work related to values and equal treatment.
- Utilizing knowledge about students' psychosocial health in the student health team's work.
**QUALIFICATIONS**
A degree in social work or another behavioral science education deemed equivalent by the employer. Great emphasis is placed on personal suitability.
In the role of school social worker, experience working with children and youth is essential. The school social worker must be able to collaborate effectively and also plan and prioritize their work independently. An inclusive approach and the ability to build positive relationships with educators, students, and guardians are important.
The role requires the ability to handle multiple perspectives, both in direct student work and in indirect preventive efforts. This necessitates a broad range of working methods and deep knowledge of children and youth and their development and situation in society. It includes extensive knowledge in behavioral and social sciences, social legislation, and social treatment work. Knowledge of the legislation governing school operations and confidentiality laws is also important. Additionally, a broad and continuously updated understanding of the community's welfare system is expected. As a school social worker, one must take independent responsibility for professional work and how the psychosocial intervention is to be concretized and formed. The school social worker should have the ability and desire to influence school culture and participate in developing the school’s student health efforts. It is important to maintain a positive attitude and recognize the strengths and opportunities of all students. As a person, the school social worker should be stable, empathetic, humble, and confident in their professional role. It is important to be able to express oneself well verbally and in writing in Swedish.
