About this role
The client is a 25-year-old woman who leads a somewhat independent life on a farm with her mother, horses, a dog, and a cat. Due to her autism diagnosis and intellectual disability, she has great difficulty reading, understanding, and relating to what is happening outside her inner world. This leads to stress, anxiety, and uncertainty. The client has a complex disability that requires a lot from her surroundings to provide the support that makes her daily life safe and meaningful. With the help of clear structure and communication tailored specifically for her, she manages most daily activities.
For this position, we need someone who understands, is capable of, and is willing to enter the client's world. The client is interested in internet culture, video games, movies, and series. She is creative and a skilled artist/designer/crafter, with an interest in cosplay.
If you want to become her assistant, you need to:
• Have an interest in learning, understanding, and accepting how our client functions.
• Have good knowledge and/or a strong interest in understanding and learning about autism and intellectual disability.
• Not be intimidated by the client potentially becoming frustrated, scared, or insecure, which may lead to screaming and meltdowns. This requires great calmness and presence from those around her.
• Share similar interests with the client.
• Be an animal lover and comfortable with a farm dog.
• Be meticulous and respect the client's difficulties with changes and carelessness.
• Be able to work in Word and image programs to create visual schedules (training will be provided; it is important that you have an interest in learning).
• Be seriously committed to the client and understand your important role in her life.
• Be self-assured and be the support she needs while also knowing when to step back.
• Having a driver's license and a car is advantageous as public transport options are very limited.
It is very important to be self-motivated, independent, and creative to provide the support the client needs. You will, of course, receive training and onboarding on how to meet the client's support needs.
If you believe you are the right person for this position, you will develop a wonderful relationship with the client and work in a lovely farm environment in an independent manner, yet still with support from the client’s team.
The position is part-time but may potentially be expanded to full-time.
