Do you want to build Sweden's next generation payment infrastructure? Bankgirot is growing and is now looking for an additional Kafka Engineer to join our team in Stockholm.
Sweden's payment market is undergoing its biggest transformation in modern times – and Bankgirot plays a central role in ensuring that the country's payments function every day, while we build the real-time platforms of the future. We are now strengthening our expertise in event-driven architecture and need you to help establish a robust, secure, and scalable platform for data-driven services.
**Your Role**
In this role, you will be a key part of Bankgirot's work in building and managing a modern, event-driven platform that will support Sweden's future payment solutions. You will have a broad responsibility, working both strategically and operationally to ensure that our Kafka environment is reliable, scalable, and ready for the high demands placed on real-time data in a business-critical operation. You will be involved in the entire chain – from design and installation to operation, monitoring, and improvement work – and collaborate closely with development teams, security functions, and platform roles to support our integration and data-driven initiatives. Your main focus areas will include:
- **Building and Operating the Kafka Platform** – You will establish, configure, and further develop the clusters on our container platform, including architecture, replication, topics, schema management, Kafka Connect, and Schema Registry.
- **Security and Stable Operations** – You will manage authentication, access controls, and access management, as well as work with troubleshooting, incident management, and processes to ensure high availability.
- **Automation and CI/CD** – You will create an efficient and predictable operational environment using GitLab, Helm, ArgoCD, and Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform and Ansible.
- **Monitoring and Optimization** – You will build monitoring and log management with Prometheus, Grafana, and Elastic, and work on capacity, performance, load testing, and continuous improvements.
**We Are Looking for You Who Have**
We are looking for someone with a solid technical background and a strong interest in distributed systems, data flows, and platform development. You have worked with Apache Kafka in production and have a good understanding of how a cluster should be designed, operated, and optimized, including management of topics, replication, consumer groups, and components such as Kafka Connect, Schema Registry, and preferably CDC solutions. You also have experience with container platforms like Kubernetes or OpenShift and know how to build a stable, secure, and scalable operational environment where both development teams and business-critical systems can rely on the platform.
Furthermore, you are comfortable with automation and CI/CD and have experience managing configurations and deployment flows using tools such as GitLab, Helm, ArgoCD, Terraform, or Ansible. You have a good understanding of security in distributed environments, where authentication, access controls, logging, and observability are natural aspects of your work approach. Experience with monitoring and performance analysis using tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, or Elastic is considered a given part of your skill set.
If you have also worked with event-driven architecture on a larger scale, have experience with cloud-based Kafka services such as Confluent Cloud or AWS MSK, or have operated in a regulated environment such as banking or insurance, it is an advantage. Above all, we are looking for a person who is curious, responsible, quality-conscious, and thrives in an environment where the reliability of technology is crucial.
**A Developing Job with Great Benefits**
As our new colleague, you will be part of a competent and positive team where we collaborate and highly value each other's skills and experiences. We invest significantly in health and well-being and offer generous benefits for our employees.
