About this role
Total Defence Research Institute (FOI) is a government agency conducting world-leading research in defense and security to support Sweden's military and civil defense. Our research spans multiple areas, including underwater technologies, cyber defense, space, electronic warfare, sensor systems, civil defense, CBRNe (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive substances), military platforms including weapons and protection, and security policy analyses. FOI's research plays a key role in building Sweden's defense capabilities.
Do you want to strengthen Sweden's total defense alongside innovative colleagues in a dynamic workplace at the technological forefront? The Electronic Warfare Division at FOI in Linköping is in a highly expansive phase, and we are seeking someone who wants to use their antenna technology expertise to contribute to Sweden's security!
About the Position
You will participate in research on antenna technology, including near-antenna signal processing, interference suppression (adaptive signal processing), direction finding, simulation, jamming, and reception. Tasks may include:
- Providing expert support in projects based on your specialist knowledge, such as design/development of new antenna solutions
- Evaluating adaptive signal processing (multi-channel systems) for interference suppression and direction finding with a focus on antenna solutions
- Analyzing collected measurement data and drawing conclusions
- Contributing to capability development of new systems and evaluating existing systems
- Reviewing/writing reports for clients
- Participating in national and international collaborations, with potential travel
Since our unit has a broad technological scope, there are great opportunities for varied work tasks. This may involve working both theoretically, with models and simulations, and practically with testing real systems.
Our projects are relatively small in terms of personnel, so your contribution will be part of a whole where you will also have great opportunity to influence project results and deepen your specialist area. Since we test systems in realistic environments with field measurements, it is meritorious if you also appreciate working outside office and laboratory settings.
About the Unit
You will be part of the Electronic Radio Countermeasures unit belonging to the Electronic Warfare Division. We develop and research new radio systems for protection against unmanned systems and radio-controlled threats, as well as developing interference and protection techniques for positioning, navigation, time (PNT), and GNSS. We develop the entire chain from algorithms to prototypes, often tested in real environments with our clients. We are a workplace with great community where those curious about new technology and with good collaborative abilities will thrive. We work closely with the Swedish Armed Forces and the Swedish Defence Material Administration, but also have good contacts with the academic world, international collaborations, the development industry, and other agencies such as the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency.
Do You Have the Competence Profile We Need?
Requirements:
We are seeking someone who has:
- Master's degree in engineering physics, electrical engineering, computer engineering, or equivalent
- Knowledge of antenna technology/antenna theory
- Good Swedish and English skills, both spoken and written
As an FOI employee, you will have great opportunity for personal influence, and it is expected that you are proactive, self-driven, curious about new technology and innovative solutions. Since you will work in project form, you need to enjoy developing solutions together with others and be goal- and result-oriented, with a flexible approach.
We want to utilize all your knowledge and interests, so please describe other competencies you wish to continue developing with us.
Great importance will be placed on personal qualities.
Meritorious:
It is meritorious but not necessary to have competence and work experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Antenna construction
- Radio communication
- AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array)
- GNSS
- UAV systems
- Signal processing in areas such as MIMO or adaptive signal processing
