The Department of Archaeology, Ancient History, and Cultural Heritage is a multidisciplinary institution characterized by several interdisciplinary collaborations. The department conducts teaching and research in the fields of archaeology, osteology, ancient culture and society, Egyptology, Assyriology, cultural heritage, and global environmental history. The department hosts the national research infrastructure Swedigarch and the excellence center The Viking World. More information about the department's activities can be found at: https://www.uu.se/institution/arkeologi-antik-historia-och-kulturvard The Uppsala Archaeobotanical Group (UAG) is a network and laboratory environment aimed at supporting and developing archaeobotanical and paleoecological analyses, with an emphasis on their application for landscape planning and sustainability today and in the future. The position is part of a collaboration with ArchLab, a national infrastructure for archaeological sciences. The infrastructure unites 13 laboratories coordinated by the Environmental Archaeology Laboratory at Umeå University, along with labs from Stockholm, Lund, and Uppsala universities. This national research infrastructure is funded by the Swedish Research Council and the participating parties. The environment creates a structure for initiating, supporting, and renewing groundbreaking research on humanity's long-term past and its relationship with the environment and the world. Responsibilities The responsibilities include method development in the preparation and analysis methods of phytoliths, pollen, and to a limited extent, macrofossil analysis. This work also includes method development in related methods, such as geomagnetism, various chemical analyses, isotopic analysis, and different dating methods. Technical services, such as the preparation of phytoliths and pollen, as well as method development, are part of the job. Collection and digitization of reference materials may also be included in the responsibilities. We are developing methods for automated analysis, and you will also coordinate this work as part of your employment. Additionally, other tasks may occur, such as participating in research, consulting, education, and/or service work related to a research infrastructure. Qualifications - A PhD in archaeology or another related field, or equivalent scientific competence. - Demonstrated scientific, technical, and methodological skills of great relevance to the operations of a research infrastructure. - Experience in laboratory environments and preparation of phytoliths. - Experience in project development and funding. - Language requirements are English and basic knowledge of Swedish. To succeed in the job, you should have a structured working approach, be flexible, and take initiative. The tasks require you to be creative while also being solution-focused and analytical. Desirable/meritorious Experience with research applications and other grant applications is desirable. Knowledge in the interpretation and method development of microfossils is preferred. About the employment The position is temporary, lasting 12 months. The scope is 20%. Start date is January 1, 2026, or by agreement. Location: Uppsala.
