The Department of Criminology belongs to the Faculty of Social Sciences at Stockholm University and has approximately 50 employees.
The department conducts high-quality research and education in criminology with support from a well-functioning administration. We are interested in issues such as the causes and structure of crime and its variation over time and space, as well as the effects of various types of sanctions and measures to reduce crime and increase safety. The Department of Criminology offers education at undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels. More information about us can be found at: https://www.su.se/kriminologiska-institutionen/.
We are now seeking 3-4 research assistants for the research program Social Services' Work with Crime Prevention - Methods, Conditions, and Outcomes (SambA). The project has an overall focus on how social services function as an arena for crime prevention. This broad perspective will include everything from general activities aimed at all children to targeted interventions and aftercare for young people discharged from out-of-home placements. The project involves researchers from both the Department of Criminology and the Department of Social Work and is conducted in collaboration with the City of Stockholm.
Job Responsibilities
Your tasks will primarily consist of quantitative data collection, partly on-site in Stockholm's 11 district administrations but mainly from an office at the department. You will code information about children and young people who are or have been subject to investigation within social services based on a coding scheme. Data collection will primarily occur through gathering information from digital social system records (Paraplysystemet), but physical records may also need to be collected if necessary. Communication and administration related to data collection are also included. The work requires a high ability to quantify information from records according to established criteria.
Coding will be conducted under the guidance of researchers, but the tasks require you to work independently, carefully, and systematically. The data collection work may involve working partially at different district administrations or at the Department of Criminology, where research assistants will sit together to ensure consistent coding, making remote work not possible. Through these tasks, you will participate in current research on how social services work to prevent crime and the outcomes for children and young people who have received interventions from social services due to norm-breaking behavior.
Qualifications
We are seeking someone with a social science education, preferably a social worker or someone with a master's degree in criminology or social work. You have high analytical skills and good knowledge of research methodology. Previous experience working with coding of case materials or similar, and knowledge of social services' digital documentation systems (Paraplysystemet) are particularly meritorious. Knowledge of research methodology, experience with Excel, and understanding of children and youth in criminality and social services' methods are also highly valued. You need to be structured and able to work systematically as data collection and coding require great accuracy. You must also be able to collaborate well with others, as collection occurs in cooperation with other research assistants, researchers, and social and district administrations in Stockholm. Previous experiences, with good references, of working as an investigator, research assistant, or similar are meritorious. Good Swedish language skills, both spoken and written, are required to conduct data collection. We place great importance on personal suitability for the tasks.
