About the Job
We are seeking a researcher to develop methods for realizing two-dimensional (2D) noble metals (primarily based on Au and Ir) from thin films of MAX phase synthesized using magnetron sputtering. The research will also encompass faceted metal oxides and their applications in photo/electrocatalysis and electronics. The researcher will also contribute to establishing connections with experts at MAX IV for synchrotron-based fundamental studies of the two-dimensional noble metals.
You will synthesize thin films of MAX phase and faceted metal oxides (TiO₂, SrTiO₃, etc.), as well as perform wet chemical exfoliation of the thin films to produce 2D metals (primarily goldene and iridene). You will also conduct synchrotron-related fundamental studies of the materials and assist in strengthening collaboration between researchers at LiU and MAX IV.
Key Responsibilities Include:
• Attracting research funding and leading awarded research projects funded by national and European funders.
• Developing synthesis protocols for producing freestanding two-dimensional noble metals and bimetallic alloys from thin films of MAX phase.
• Writing applications to obtain synchrotron time and performing material characterization using synchrotron-based spectromicroscopy (ARPES, PEEM, RIXS, and XAFS).
• Developing and optimizing scalable synthesis of faceted oxides and the FSEA method (Facet-Selective Electrostatic Assembly) to create structures for photocatalysis.
• Supervising PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers in synchrotron-based spectromicroscopy, as well as providing guidance in related application work.
About You
We are looking for a researcher who is genuinely interested in fundamental materials science and also has an interest in entrepreneurship. Since the position is located in an international research environment and involves international collaboration, you must have excellent communication and networking skills.
You should have:
• A PhD in materials science, chemistry, physics, or a related field.
• Documented experience in the synthesis and characterization of MAX phases in thin film form and their chemical exfoliation to produce two-dimensional noble metals. You should also have documented experience in investigating faceted metal oxides.
• Proven experience with advanced characterization techniques, particularly synchrotron-based methods, as well as successful application work related to these.
• Demonstrated ability to attract external research funding as a project leader.
It is advantageous if you have:
• Experience in entrepreneurship.
• International research experience from multiple countries.
Your Workplace
The position is located at the Department of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (IFM). You will be part of a world-leading environment for materials science, known for its groundbreaking work in 2D and functional materials.
More information about the activities at the Department of Material Design can be found at https://liu.se/organisation/liu/ifm/mdesign.
