About this role

The University of Gothenburg meets societal challenges with diverse knowledge. With 58,000 students and 6,800 employees, the university is a large and inspiring workplace. Strong research and attractive educational programs attract researchers and students from all over the world. With new knowledge and perspectives, the University of Gothenburg contributes to a better future. At the Department of Biology and Environmental Science (BioEnv), educational and research activities span from mountain ecosystems through forests, land, and waterways, all the way to the sea. In these environments, we work with various biological organizational levels, from genes to individuals, populations, communities, and ecosystems. We operate within ecology, evolution, physiology, systematics, and combinations of these fields to understand the significance of natural and human-induced environmental changes. The department's activities are conducted at two different locations: the university's facilities in Natrium at Medicinaregatan 7B in Gothenburg, and at the Kristineberg Marine Research Station, operated by the Marine Infrastructure at the University of Gothenburg. The current positions are primarily based in field locations as specified below, but for some roles, work may be entirely or partially conducted in our offices and laboratories in Gothenburg. We Offer The University of Gothenburg is a government authority, which means special benefits, more vacation, and a good pension. We also offer flexible working hours to balance personal life and work. You can read more about our employment benefits here. Project Description/Subject Description Within the research groups EDGE lab (Ecological Dynamics at Geographic Extremes) and APE (Alpine and Polar Ecology), research is conducted on various projects related to arctic ecology and ecosystem science, with a primary focus on plant ecology and greenhouse gas emissions. The projects study the connections between global environmental changes and local changes in species communities, microclimates, and greenhouse gas emissions. Data collection for the projects primarily occurs in the field and, to some extent, through laboratory experiments and analyses. Job Responsibilities During the summer of 2026, there is a need for seasonal staff for both fieldwork, with some preparatory and follow-up work in our facilities in Gothenburg, and for laboratory work in Gothenburg. The scope and duration of employment may vary based on job responsibilities. Work will be conducted in the following areas: Field Work Fieldwork during the summer of 2026 will primarily take place at the Latnjajaure field station, accessible by helicopter from Abisko. Stays in the field will range from a week to up to three months, where accommodations are of a simpler standard (small cabins shared by several people, with no running water or sewage). Fieldwork tasks will vary as needed but may include measurements of natural greenhouse gas emissions from ecosystems, vegetation surveys, species identification (primarily vascular plants), weather observations, phenological measurements, soil and water sampling, pollination experiments, installation and maintenance of technical equipment, and data processing. Part of the work will involve following protocols issued within the framework of ITEX (International Tundra Experiment). Longer stays outside mobile and fixed communication networks are expected. Work may also be conducted in other arctic or alpine areas, both within and outside Scandinavia. Preparatory and follow-up work will take place at the Department of Biology and Environmental Science at the University of Gothenburg and may include planning fieldwork, reviewing and processing data, sample processing (sorting, sifting, weighing, etc.), and handling collected seeds. Laboratory Work, Gothenburg Laboratory work will take place in our facilities in Natrium in Gothenburg. Laboratory tasks vary within the operations and may include handling and analysis of stable (15N, 13C) and radioactive (14C, 33P) isotopes, gas chromatography, microbial analyses, incubation studies, carbon and nitrogen analyses, and water analyses. Additionally, we are seeking staff to assist with a large experiment in our plant cultivation facility in Natrium, which includes taking care of plants and performing measurements during the experiment. Applicants can specify their area of interest and preference for field or laboratory work in their application, but the assignment of tasks and duration of stays will be determined through dialogue between the applicant and responsible staff. Individuals who are hired may be utilized across all the aforementioned locations and areas of work.
