About this role

Core mission: The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), located in Grenoble, France, is Europe's premier research facility for fundamental research utilizing neutrons. The ILL operates the brightest neutron source in the world and hosts over 2000 visits by scientists each year, who come to conduct world-class research. You will serve as the primary technical contact for the neutron imaging instruments (experimental stations) "MoTo" and "PorTo" within the Applied Science group, collaborating with other technicians in the group. You will work closely with the scientists responsible for the instruments to which you are assigned. Depending on the needs of the various instruments, you may also be asked to work concurrently on other instruments within the group. Your tasks: Within the Applied Science group, in close collaboration with the instrument team, you will have the following responsibilities: - Conduct maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair work on the instruments and associated equipment - Participate in technical projects related to the instruments, such as sample environments - Create drawings (in SolidWorks), calibrate equipment, and maintain technical documentation - Perform conventional machining operations such as turning and milling - Assist instrument scientists and visiting scientists in preparing their experiments and provide technical advice to instrument users regarding sample environments and instrumentation during experiments - Engage in the design and development of equipment for MoTo, PorTo, and other instruments in the Applied Science group in collaboration with other ILL services - Ensure compliance with instrument safety regulations, particularly those related to nuclear safety. Your profile: - You hold a Level 4/5 qualification (e.g., BTEC, HNC/HND or equivalent) in mechanical engineering, applied physics, instrumentation, or a related field, with at least two years of professional experience in the area. - You have experience in the manufacture, assembly, and alignment of precision mechanical and optical assemblies. - You are proficient in the use of CAD software. - Ideally, you also possess some knowledge of computing, electronics, and electricity, enabling you to participate in other technical projects. - You have a practical approach to your work and are eager to learn new skills. - You are capable of working independently on a wide variety of projects. - You possess the necessary interpersonal skills to collaborate with in-house and visiting scientists.
