Toyota Material Handling in Mjölby develops autonomous and semi-autonomous trucks for efficient goods handling. The current solution relies on LIDAR to create an environmental map. To reduce hardware costs and simplify integration, we want to evaluate whether monocular RGB cameras can generate a semantic map of traversable surfaces.
In your thesis at Toyota, you will work on:
* Investigating whether monocular RGB cameras can be used for mapping traversable surfaces in warehouse environments.
* Developing a method for 3D reconstruction of maps from monocular cameras.
* Evaluating multiple methods and measuring them against each other.
* Using synthetic data as a test platform, varying camera position and field of view. Comparing with ground truth.
The purpose of the work is to reconstruct a map of traversable surfaces from images taken by monocular cameras placed on trucks in a simulated environment. We also want to explore how well we can combine mapping with other purposes, such as Obstacle Detection, by using the same sensor and placement.
