The Ambulance Service is one of 17 operations within the county's healthcare area for Somatics/Primary Care Area South, responsible for care within its specialty throughout the county and ensuring that patients have access to the county's collective specialist competence on equal terms. This is part of increasing access to care and its quality. The ambulance service has a county-wide mission and consists of five ambulance stations and three satellite stations operated by Region Västernorrland, as well as three privately operated ambulance stations. Currently, nurses, specialist nurses, and nursing assistants work in the service. The operation currently runs ambulances and patient transport vehicles. The service has approximately 200 employees, including six unit managers. The county ambulance service handles about 36,000 alarms per year. Its responsibilities include pre-hospital care, which involves assessment and treatment of acutely ill and injured patients of all ages and with all types of conditions and injuries before hospital care.
Through the national and regional organization for knowledge management, the ambulance service actively participates in the development and implementation of guidelines, processes, and working methods. The service has important interfaces and collaborations in its daily work with SOS Alarm, emergency departments, care wards, primary care, psychiatric care, state and municipal rescue services, social services, municipal care and nursing, and the police.
