About this role

Department of Chemistry - Ångström conducts research and education in the field of chemistry. The department has 270 employees and a turnover of 300 million SEK. Its six programs conduct highly successful research of international caliber. We have a large number of externally funded research projects, often with international collaboration, and we see continued strong growth in our field. The department has educational assignments for engineering and civil engineering programs as well as master's programs. More information can be found at https://www.uu.se/institution/kemi-angstrom. The Structural Chemistry Program at the Department of Chemistry - Ångström has long been focused on developing materials and applications in the battery field: Ångström Advanced Battery Center. We develop new electrode and electrolyte materials, characterize them, improve materials in terms of battery performance, and study fundamental chemical properties in batteries using both experimental and theoretical methods. The research is thus both fundamental and applied. This doctoral project will be carried out in collaboration with the Royal Institute of Technology, Department of Fiber and Polymer Technology. The doctoral education will be conducted and examined at both institutions. Employment time will be distributed between the two institutions, with work conducted at one institution during years 1 and 3 and at the other during years 2 and 4. The exact distribution between institutions will be determined in consultation with the candidate offered the position. The position is advertised at both Uppsala University and the Royal Institute of Technology. Application is made through Uppsala University's recruitment system. Job Responsibilities The doctoral project involves experimental studies of polymer electrolytes primarily in solid phase, for applications in Li-based batteries. Polymer synthesis, electrolyte fabrication, prototype battery construction and testing are included in the project. The project also involves applying various material characterization methods (spectroscopy, structural characterization) and electrochemical characterization of both electrolytes and electrochemical cells. The project is conducted within the framework of the competence center Batteries Sweden and can therefore be carried out to some extent in collaboration with relevant industry. In addition to the research project, which will result in a doctoral thesis authored by the doctoral student, the doctoral studies also include courses and possibly teaching or other departmental service to some extent. Qualification Requirements To be admitted to doctoral education, the applicant must meet both basic and specific eligibility requirements. Basic eligibility is met by those who have: - Completed an advanced level degree, or - Completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 credits at advanced level, or - Otherwise acquired essentially equivalent knowledge domestically or internationally Special eligibility is met by those who have: - Passed approved courses in relevant areas corresponding to at least 90 higher education credits (of which at least 60 credits at advanced level and at least 30 credits in chemistry, including 15 credits of independent work) or otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge - English skills corresponding to English 6 Examples of qualifying education include: - Advanced level degree with main field of chemistry or chemical engineering with specialization in relevant area - Other advanced level degree with at least 60 credits in relevant area for doctoral education Great importance will also be placed on personal qualities such as good collaborative ability, drive and independence, and how the applicant's experience and competence are assessed for completing doctoral education. Desirable/Meritorious Qualities It is desirable for applicants to have: - Educational or research experience in polymers and polymer materials - Educational or research experience with batteries, especially Li-based batteries - General experience and knowledge of materials chemistry and electrochemistry About the Position The position is time-limited, according to Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5 § 7. Full-time employment. Start date: February 1, 2026, or by agreement. Location: Uppsala (and Stockholm) Doctoral regulations can be found in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5 §§ 1-7 and at https://www.uu.se/medarbetare/organisation-styrning/regler/ Position inquiries: Daniel Brandell, [email protected], +46 18-4713709 Karin Odelius, [email protected], +46 8-7908076 Apply by December 1, 2025, UFV-PA 2025/3381.
