About this role

Project Description PhD Subject: Computer Science We are seeking two highly motivated individuals to pursue a doctoral degree in algorithms and data analysis. The research group develops practical computer science algorithms with provable guarantees, by leveraging theoretical insights to obtain state-of-the-art practical algorithms. Currently, we focus on randomized algorithms and probabilistic data structures such as data sketches, Bloom filters, and hash functions. We are also interested in implementing and developing efficient data structures for subroutines occurring in computer science algorithms. The positions have a strong mathematical character, and doctoral students will spend a significant portion of their work analyzing algorithms theoretically. Several project directions are possible and will be determined in collaboration with the doctoral students. Supervision: Professor Aristides Gionis and Associate Senior Lecturer Ioana-Oriana Bercea are proposed to supervise the doctoral student. Final decision will be made upon admission. We Offer - The opportunity to pursue a PhD at KTH - A workplace with many benefits and monthly salary according to the doctoral salary scale Eligibility for Admission To be admitted to doctoral studies (Chapter 7, Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility: - Completed a second-cycle degree, or - Completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 credits at the advanced level, or - Acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way within or outside the country - Good English skills in speech and writing are required to publish and present results at international conferences Selection Criteria To succeed in your doctoral studies at KTH, you need to be goal-oriented and persistent in your work. Candidates will be assessed on their ability to: - Work independently - Collaborate with others - Maintain a professional approach - Analyze and work with complex issues - Demonstrate a strong background and passionate interest in algorithm design and mathematics (especially probability and optimization) - Present an outstanding academic record Additional Requirements: - Must have or be completing a master's degree - Suitable backgrounds include computer science, mathematics, electrical engineering, or theoretical technical physics - Highly motivated candidates preferred - Previous participation in International Mathematical Olympiads and/or International Olympiads in Informatics is meritorious Personal characteristics will be given significant weight after meeting eligibility requirements. Target Degree: Doctoral Degree Application Apply through KTH's recruitment system. The application must include: - CV with relevant professional experiences and skills - Application letter explaining motivation for doctoral studies (max 2 pages) - Copies of degree certificates and transcripts - Representative publications or technical reports KTH shapes the future through education, research, and innovation. As a leading international technical university, we play an active role in driving the transition to a sustainable society.
