Project Description
PhD Subject: Computer Science
This position is associated with Associate Professor Florian Pokorny's research group, which focuses on machine learning methods for robot manipulation.
The project will focus on developing new approaches that can integrate very large, real-world experiments for robot manipulation and benchmarking into a robust and statistically reliable data-driven pipeline to enable robots to learn new manipulation skills. The project will leverage CloudGripper, the lab's large-scale, remotely accessible cloud robotics platform with a variety of robot arm work cells for this research. Establishing internationally relevant large-scale, real-world datasets for robot manipulation, benchmarks, and research results that establish a reliable ground truth for robot manipulation research is a key component of the proposed project, in particular.
Supervision: Florian Pokorny is proposed as the doctoral student's supervisor. The decision will be made upon admission.

Admission Requirements
To be admitted to doctoral studies (Chapter 7, Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility:
- Completed a degree at an advanced level, or
- Completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 credits at an advanced level, or
- Acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way, within or outside the country.
In addition to the above, there are also specific admission requirements.

Information on Admission and Employment
Only those admitted to doctoral studies may be employed as doctoral students. The total employment period may not exceed four years of full-time doctoral education. A employed doctoral student may perform certain tasks in a limited scope (maximum 20%) such as education and administration. A new doctoral student employment is valid for a maximum of one year and may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time. For studies to be completed with a licentiate degree, the total employment period may not exceed two years of full-time doctoral education.
