We have the power of over 40,000 students and employees. Students who provide hope for the future. Employees who contribute every day to Linköping University taking on contemporary challenges. Our core values rest on credibility, trust, and security. By being brave, thinking freely, and doing something new, we create a better future together, through big and small actions. Welcome to apply for a job with us! We are now seeking a PhD candidate in AI and Autonomous Systems, focusing on Trustworthy AI for safety-critical autonomous systems in open, human environments. Your Responsibilities The planned research will involve developing Hybrid AI methods (inference, planning, machine learning, etc.) for autonomous systems (intelligent robots), with the goal of significantly increasing the degree of practically usable autonomy in society. The research will be led by Professor Fredrik Heintz and Dr. Mattias Tiger, who will be the primary and co-supervisors, respectively. The project will be conducted in close collaboration with LiU's Field Robotics Laboratory (AILAB) and partners from private and public sectors. As a PhD candidate, you will focus on your research education and research projects. Your work may also include teaching or participating in other departmental assignments, up to 20 percent of full-time. Your Qualifications We are seeking an enthusiastic person for our interdisciplinary research group. You should enjoy working as part of a team and be willing to learn from your colleagues and, in turn, share your knowledge and experience with them. Scientific curiosity and the ability to think independently are essential personal qualities. You are expected to collaborate with colleagues and support the research group's activities. You must also have excellent oral and written communication skills in English. Good oral and written communication skills in Swedish are a merit. You should have a master's degree in computer science or completed courses totaling at least 240 higher education credits, including at least 60 credits at an advanced level in AI, machine learning, computer science, and mathematics, or have acquired essentially equivalent knowledge through other means. As an applicant, you must demonstrate very high proficiency in computer science, algorithms, programming, and mathematical maturity. You also need to show documented knowledge and experience in autonomous systems (intelligent robots). Broad knowledge of AI and good knowledge of automatic planning, computer vision, machine learning, formal methods, natural language processing, and data security are advantages. Research experience is an advantage but not a requirement. In your personal letter, explain why you are interested in the position and why you are particularly suited for it. Your Workplace You will work at the Reasoning and Learning (ReaL) lab in the Department of Artificial Intelligence and Integrated Computer Systems (AIICS) at the Department of Computer Science (IDA) at Linköping University. Linköping University (LiU) is a center of research excellence in AI with strong and broad research and education in AI, both from a technical and interdisciplinary perspective. Coordinator of TrustLLM, a large EU project to develop trustworthy and fact-based language models. Host of Sweden's largest research program Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP), Wallenberg AI and Transformative Technologies Education Development Program (WASP-ED), and National Academic Infrastructure for Supercomputing in Sweden (NAISS), which includes a EuroHPC (Arrhenius) and an AI factory (Mimer). The Department of Artificial Intelligence and Integrated Computer Systems has a high international reputation for its research in many areas of AI dating back to the 70s. The Reasoning and Learning lab primarily researches machine learning, reasoning, and their combination with applications in areas such as autonomous systems, multi-agent systems, and practical applications in public and private sectors.
