PhD Candidate in Applied Geophysics with Focus on Seismic Methods and Petrophysics for Mineral Exploration
The Department of Earth Sciences is Sweden's largest and most versatile institution of its kind, with a unique breadth and approximately 300 employees.
Our activities are interdisciplinary, combining natural sciences and technology with social sciences. We have research programs in air, water, and landscape studies; geophysics; natural resources and sustainable development; mineralogy, petrology, and tectonics; paleobiology, and wind energy. By studying Earth's history, we understand how the planet has evolved and how our pursuit of sustainable development can benefit from this knowledge. For more information: https://www.geo.uu.se/.
Geophysics is about "looking inside" and understanding Earth's structure, its history, and processes – based on measurements of the planet's physical properties. In geophysics, we use quantitative physical methods to investigate the Earth and its environment. The program currently drives several national and international projects and has access to world-class research infrastructures. It also leads the Smart Exploration Research Center (http://www.smartexploration.se/), a collaboration between four Swedish universities and several technology and industry partners.
Job Responsibilities
The doctoral candidate's tasks will consist of research within a series of planned innovative work in and outside Sweden, sponsored by various industry and research funding organizations (e.g., the Strategic Research Foundation, SSF) and within the recently established Smart Exploration Research Center for sustainable and responsible exploration of critical raw materials. We are seeking a candidate interested in seismic methods, physical properties of rocks and minerals, and machine learning solutions. The doctoral candidate will work within a larger research team, involving collaboration and data sharing. A significant portion of the work will focus on seismic methods and petrophysics, including joint interpretations with other geological and geochemical data. The doctoral position is for four years and can be extended by up to 20% through assistant duties in research, fieldwork, and teaching.
Qualifications
Eligible for doctoral-level education is someone who has:
- Completed a master's level degree in geophysics, geology, physics, geoscience, or similar, or
- Completed at least 240 higher education credits, including at least 60 credits at the advanced level, with an independent thesis of at least 15 credits, or
- Acquired essentially equivalent knowledge through other means.
The applicant must be able to speak and write English at an advanced level. Since the work partially involves fieldwork, the applicant should be willing to work outdoors periodically, collecting data independently or with others.
Desirable/Meritorious Qualifications
Experience in seismic field data collection, working with new instruments and electronics, working with seismic data, Linux, and programming skills (e.g., MATLAB or Python) are important and will be considered meritorious. A driver's license is an asset as it may be needed for fieldwork.
Doctoral regulations can be found in the Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 5, §§ 1-7, and in the university's rules and guidelines.
