About this role

Luleå University of Technology is experiencing strong growth with world-leading expertise across multiple research areas. We shape the future through innovative education and groundbreaking research results, and by leveraging the Arctic region, we create global societal benefits. Our scientific and artistic research and education are conducted in close collaboration with international, national, and regional companies, public actors, and leading universities. Luleå University of Technology has a total annual turnover of approximately 2.1 billion SEK. We currently have 1,900 employees and 18,700 students. In the coming years, billions will be invested in Norrbotten and Västerbotten through large-scale projects aimed at creating a more sustainable society nationally and globally. Luleå University of Technology is involved in several of these highly relevant research projects and the accompanying societal transformation. We offer a broad range of educational programs to match the demanded skills. We hope you will help us build the sustainable companies and societies of the future. Robotics and Artificial Intelligence (RAI) at the Department of System and Space Technology at Luleå University of Technology is now seeking a doctoral candidate to contribute to our growing operations. The RAI team conducts fundamental and principled research across all aspects of robotics, with a specific focus on aerial, space, and bio-inspired robotics. Subject Description Robotics and Artificial Intelligence aims to develop new robotic systems characterized by advanced autonomy to improve robots' ability to interact with their environment and humans while performing specific tasks. Project Description RAI's fundamental vision is to reduce the gap between theory and reality, and the team has a strong background in field robotics. Application areas we focus on include robotics for mines, aerial inspection of aging infrastructure, multi-robot search and rescue for emergency services, and similar domains. Additionally, we work on multi-sensor fusion and multi-robot coordination, which includes environmental perception, decentralization, and mission execution for multi-robot systems. The RAI team has strong European and national participation in several R&D&I projects. Duties You will conduct research with experimental elements, to be published in internationally recognized academic journals and at major conferences. You will also assist in supervising theses, provide teaching assistance, and support funding applications for future research projects from research funding agencies/councils, EU projects, or industry. As a doctoral candidate, you will work on autonomous robotic systems, and activities will be linked to national, European, and global R&D projects. The doctoral position will involve extensive research activities in design, experimentation, and theoretical development, focusing on the following combined research areas. Previous experience in one, or preferably several, of these areas is merit: - Reconfigurable 5G connectivity - 5G/6G QoS (Quality of Service) - Communication network regulation - Markov processes - Network-based localization / Radio-based connectivity - Adaptive bandwidth - Mesh networks - Wireless sensor networks - Edge computing - Time-delayed systems - Adaptive queuing For additional information on specific doctoral education, please refer to the study plans for doctoral education within the Faculty of Technology. Qualifications To be qualified for the doctoral position, you must have a five-year university degree in computer engineering, engineering physics, or another relevant subject. Strong scientific skills and excellence in experimental research, as well as good communication abilities in speech and writing. You will represent the group in various contexts, both in Sweden and internationally, therefore excellent English skills are required. Information The doctoral position is time-limited to 4 years, with teaching and other institutional duties up to 20% of full-time. Duty station is Luleå, with start date by arrangement.
