Uppsala Health Economics (UHE) is a specialized unit of health economists at the Department of Public Health and Caring Sciences, Uppsala University. Our team has expertise in applying health economic methods to health issues, including RCT-based and model-based economic evaluations, and using registry data to evaluate health and economic effects of healthcare interventions. Our health economists lead several projects in various areas, including mental health, child health, public health, precision medicine, and healthcare innovation. We collaborate with clinics to achieve the best possible outcomes. We have multiple national and international partners and engage in commissioned work for healthcare providers, municipalities, regions, and foundations.
We are now seeking a PhD candidate in health economics to work on the project "Economic Burden and Value of Eating Disorder Prevention in Sweden".
Work Tasks
Eating disorders are among the most severe and disabling mental illnesses, with significant consequences for physical and mental health, as well as work capacity. Despite this, Swedish research on the economic consequences of eating disorders and the value of preventive measures is lacking. The project aims to increase understanding of the economic effects of eating disorders and how these can be reduced through prevention in a Swedish context.
The project encompasses three main work packages:
Estimate the economic burden of eating disorders in Sweden by analyzing population-based data from the National Quality Register for Eating Disorder Treatment linked to other Swedish registers. Investigate the relationship between eating disorders and work performance using cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses. Conduct cost-effectiveness analyses of universal and targeted preventive interventions using decision modeling and registry data.
The work includes registry data analysis, economic modeling, and syntheses of existing literature. The project is conducted in collaboration with researchers at Uppsala University and other Swedish universities, along with an advisory group consisting of decision-makers, clinicians, and individuals with personal experience of eating disorders.
Qualification Requirements
Eligibility requires:
Completed courses totaling at least 240 higher education credits, including at least 60 at an advanced level, or equivalent degree relevant to the field. Master's degree in health economics, public health, or equivalent. Documented research or research project experience. Excellent ability to communicate orally and in writing in English.
The ideal candidate has strong analytical skills and data analysis experience, strong scientific writing and communication skills, and the ability to quickly learn new research methods. We seek someone who enjoys working both independently and in teams, who is creative, curious, and wants to contribute to a positive and collaborative research environment.
Desirable/Meriting Qualities
It is advantageous if you have:
Experience working with Swedish registry data or other quantitative data sources. Experience in health economic evaluations or decision analysis. Knowledge of statistical programs like STATA, R, or equivalent. Experience with systematic literature reviews. Basic Swedish language skills. Background in medical science
