Luleå University of Technology has a total annual turnover of approximately 2.1 billion Swedish kronor. We currently have 1,900 employees and 18,700 students.
In the coming years, multi-billion investments are being made in Norrbotten and Västerbotten in large projects aimed at creating a more sustainable society both nationally and globally. Luleå University of Technology is involved in several of these highly relevant research projects and the societal transformation that follows. We offer a broad range of educational programs to match the demanded competencies. We hope you will help us build the sustainable companies and societies of the future.
The Machine Learning Research Group at Luleå University of Technology is seeking a PhD candidate in Machine Learning. We offer well-equipped research laboratory facilities and an excellent interdisciplinary academic network in Sweden and internationally.
Subject Description
Machine Learning focuses on methods by which computer systems use data to improve their own performance, understanding, and make concrete predictions, with close connections to practical applications.
Project Description
This PhD project focuses on developing the field of multimodal data analysis and generation by integrating computer vision, natural language processing (NLP), and machine learning to enable innovative interactions with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The goal is to develop a system that can analyze and synthesize multimodal data – by combining visual images with textual inputs – to enhance UAV capabilities in real-world applications.
The project aims to effectively handle unannotated or partially annotated datasets through the use of semi-supervised/self-supervised learning, enabling scalable and cost-effective solutions.
The result will include a proof-of-concept demo showcasing multimodal data-driven interactions with drones.
You will also be involved in the MARTINA project. This project drives innovation and development forward through applied AI and advanced digitalization to strengthen the competitiveness of the region's small and medium-sized enterprises.
Job Responsibilities
As a PhD candidate, you are expected to perform both experimental and theoretical work within your research study and communicate your results at national and international conferences and in scientific journals. Most of your working time will be dedicated to research studies. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to acquire teaching experience by participating in our teaching assignments.
Qualifications
We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic PhD candidate with the following competencies and skills:
Technical Competencies:
- Strong foundation in computer vision (e.g., object detection, image segmentation) and NLP (e.g., text reasoning, language models)
- Knowledge of generative AI models (e.g., transformers, GANs) for text, image, or cross-modal data
- Experience with self-supervised and weakly supervised learning
- Knowledge of UAV technology or experience with embedded systems is meritorious
- Solid programming skills in Python or similar languages
As a person, you should have strong analytical and problem-solving abilities. You should also have excellent written and oral communication skills in English. It is important that you have good collaborative skills in an interdisciplinary and dynamic research team.
