Subject Description The subject encompasses fundamental and applied studies within process metallurgy, specifically pyrometallurgy, with an emphasis on process phenomena that facilitate a transition towards more sustainable, environmentally friendly, energy- and resource-efficient metal production. This includes the development of new metallurgical knowledge and processes to enhance increased recycling, substitute critical societal raw materials, and reduce the environmental impact of metal production and its by-products. The subject also involves research on how to create circularity and a circular economy to advance a modern, sustainable metal industry. Responsibilities The position includes research and teaching within the subject area. In terms of research, the assistant professor is expected to develop the activity into new research areas, including experimental as well as theoretical studies. The assistant professor is expected to create new networks both within and outside KTH and actively apply for research funding. The assistant professor is also expected to teach at the undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels within the subject area. This includes the development of existing and new courses. Additionally, the assistant professor is expected to contribute to the operation and development of discipline-related educational programs, as well as supervise theses and doctoral students within the subject area. The assistant professor's activities are expected to contribute to fulfilling KTH's objectives for sustainable development. The assistant professor will have the opportunity to develop their independence as a researcher and gain qualifications that may lead to eligibility for a higher academic position that demands more stringent qualifications (see Chapter 4, Section 12 a of the Higher Education Ordinance). The assistant professor may apply for promotion to associate professor according to Chapter 4, Section 12 c of the Higher Education Ordinance. Eligibility To be eligible for appointment as an assistant professor, candidates must have completed a doctoral degree or possess equivalent scientific competence. Primarily, candidates should have obtained their doctoral degree or achieved equivalent competence no more than seven years prior to the application for the assistant professor position. However, those who obtained their doctoral degree or achieved equivalent competence earlier may also be considered if there are special reasons. Special reasons refer to leave due to illness, parental leave, or other similar circumstances. Assessment Criteria The assessment criteria for employment as an assistant professor at KTH include the criteria specified in section 1.3 of KTH's employment regulations in relation to the established employment profile. It is of utmost importance that the applicant has demonstrated: - Scientific competence shown through scientific publications, conference participation, involvement in research collaborations, and other commitments in the scientific community, such as review or expert assignments. - Potential for qualification for a higher academic position. This includes potential for independent development as a researcher and teacher within the relevant subject area, as well as the ability to establish, innovate, and develop the current research area. - Potential to contribute to the subject area as a whole, including theoretical and experimental studies. It is of secondary importance that the applicant has demonstrated: - Interest in and insights regarding pedagogical development within the relevant subject area. - Interest in and insights regarding leadership in academia, collaboration with the surrounding society, and awareness of diversity and equality issues, with a special focus on gender equality. - Experience of postdoctoral studies in a research environment other than the institution where the applicant received their doctorate. Experience in research and development within industry or other organizations may be assessed as equivalent to a traditional postdoctoral stay at another institution. It is also of significance that the applicant has demonstrated: - Administrative competence. Special Assessment Criteria for Promotion to Associate Professor In evaluating applications for promotion to associate professor, the provisions of section 1.2.4 in KTH’s employment regulations will apply. The ability to teach in Swedish is a merit that is given significant weight in the application for promotion. The position is part of KTH's Tenure Track system, and the assistant professor will be evaluated for promotion to associate professor following their application.
