The Department of Education and Special Education (IPS) conducts research, doctoral education, undergraduate education, and collaboration assignments within education and special education. Key areas of interest at the department include educational and societal relations, education systems, school development and leadership, adult education, inclusion, learning, language and assessment, as well as grading issues. A significant part of the department's undergraduate education occurs within various teacher programs, but we also offer independent programs, courses, and commissioned education in the aforementioned subjects. For further information about the Department of Education and Special Education: http://www.ips.gu.se Subject Education Subject Description Education is a scientific discipline focusing on education, teaching, upbringing, socialization, enlightenment, and learning in various contexts, both within and outside the formal education system. Special emphasis is placed on the relationship between the individual and society, as well as how the changing conditions of education are shaped by historical, cultural, political, and ethical processes and through pedagogical professional and knowledge traditions. Central themes include enlightenment, forms of knowledge, lifelong learning, values, democracy, and human rights. At the Department of Education and Special Education, the subject is characterized by a clear societal perspective, focusing on the relationships between educational practices and the surrounding society, as well as how education systems are created, transformed, and differentiated. Job Responsibilities The position is a merit-based appointment and includes 50% research, as well as teaching, collaboration, and some administration. The responsibilities include contributing to the department's activities within research and teaching. The assistant professor is expected to independently conduct research and be active in one or more of the department's research environments, stay updated in their research area, and actively seek research funding. The teaching responsibilities primarily consist of instruction, supervision, and examination at both undergraduate and advanced levels, as well as pedagogical development work. Work in external educational assignments may occur, as well as teaching and supervision in doctoral education. The assistant professor is expected to contribute to an ongoing discussion about how research and education can mutually develop and ensure that relevant research perspectives are included within the framework of the department's teaching assignments. The purpose of the appointment as assistant professor is to develop the employee's pedagogical skills and research for further opportunities for merit. Qualifications Eligibility for employment as a teacher is regulated by the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4 and the University of Gothenburg's employment regulations. Eligible for appointment as an assistant professor in education is someone who: • has obtained a doctoral degree in education or has equivalent scientific competence in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance (HF Chapter 4, Section 12 a) and the Employment Regulations for Teachers at the University of Gothenburg (GU 2024/3252). • has demonstrated pedagogical proficiency. Primarily, candidates who have obtained their doctoral degree or have equivalent scientific competence within five years prior to the application deadline for the position of assistant professor will be considered. However, candidates who obtained their doctoral degree or achieved equivalent competence more than five years before the application deadline may also be considered if there are special reasons. Special reasons may include leave due to illness, parental leave, or other similar circumstances. Employment Fixed-term employment for four years with the possibility of promotion to university lecturer and a permanent position. The employment is 100% with a permanent placement at the Department of Education and Special Education. Start date is negotiable.
