Bioinformatician
The National Bioinformatics Infrastructure Sweden (NBIS; https://nbis.se) is a large and rapidly growing national infrastructure that promotes research in the life sciences in Sweden by providing support, infrastructure, and advanced training in the field of bioinformatics. NBIS serves as the bioinformatics platform at SciLifeLab (https://www.scilifelab.se), a national resource that offers advanced large-scale technologies and expertise in the biosciences, and is also the Swedish node in the European infrastructure ELIXIR for biological information.
One of our bioinformaticians will be on parental leave, and we are therefore seeking a temporary replacement bioinformatician for our health and clinical research support team. The team works on all aspects of bioinformatics analyses primarily involving human data in medical and clinical questions. The individuals hired will be integrated into a bioinformatics team in an exciting research environment with many opportunities for the development of new and existing skills to stay updated with new sequencing technologies and other bioinformatics challenges as they arise.
**Responsibilities**
We are looking for an expert who will primarily work with bioinformatics analysis of human transcriptomics and genomics data, but also with other types of bioinformatics analyses. The work involves supporting Swedish researchers in this area, and the projects you participate in will vary in complexity and duration, addressing diverse medical and clinical questions.
Responsibilities include planning, initiating, performing, and reporting analyses, as well as communicating with research groups and staying updated in the field. Additionally, there may be opportunities to contribute to advanced training for Swedish researchers in bioinformatics. Regular internal meetings and training, along with time for skill development and learning from a diverse group of NBIS colleagues, provide the conditions for NBIS bioinformaticians to conduct high-quality bioinformatics analyses.
The work will involve some travel, as knowledge exchange is an important part of our operations to maintain expertise in the analysis of existing and new data types.
**Qualifications**
Successful applicants must meet the following requirements:
- PhD in one of the following fields: bioinformatics, molecular medicine, or a closely related field deemed relevant by the employer.
- Postdoctoral experience working with bioinformatics analyses of omics data.
- Extensive experience (at least 10 years) in advanced bioinformatics analyses, including experience in the analysis (pre-processing and statistical analyses, selection, and visualization) of bulk and single-cell transcriptomics data, spatial proteomics data (e.g., Pixelgen), genetic association studies, as well as Illumina and Nanopore whole genome, methylation, and RNAseq sequencing data.
- Documented experience (at least 5 years) working with inflammatory and infectious diseases.
- Experience (at least 5 years) of independently managing support projects and performing data analysis related to omics data at an internationally competitive level.
- Experience working in a national infrastructure for bioinformatics support.
- Proficient in a scripting language such as R or Python, working with bioinformatics pipelines, especially Nextflow, and effectively working in a Linux command-line environment and on large-scale computing clusters.
- Excellent communication skills in English, both spoken and written, and the ability to communicate with researchers from diverse backgrounds.
- Strong experience collaborating and working in a service-oriented organization.
- Willingness to learn new methods and the ability to develop new skills.
Consideration will also be given to good collaboration skills, drive, independence, and personal maturity, as well as how well the applicant's experience and skills complement and enhance NBIS operations.
**Desirable/Additional Qualifications**
- Knowledge transfer is another important concept for us, and experience in mentoring is highly meritorious.
- Experience working with autoimmune diseases is additionally meritorious.
- "Reproducible research" and "FAIR data" are central concepts for us, and experience with relevant tools and methods is advantageous.
