About this role

The Total Defence Research Institute (FOI) is a government agency conducting world-leading research in defense and security to support Sweden's military and civilian defense. The research spans several areas, including underwater, cyber defense, space, electronic warfare, sensor systems, civil defense, CBRNe (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive materials), military platforms including weapons and protection, as well as security policy analysis. About the Position In the role of Department Controller, you will have overall responsibility for the department's financial management. This means ensuring that the department adheres to the agency's governance, guidelines, and processes, as well as ensuring the conditions for sound financial management within the department. You will be responsible for the department's budgeting, monitoring, and investment processes and will play a central role in the department's task management. You will drive and coordinate the department's operational processes in the form of action plans and risk analyses. Your duties include informing and supporting the department's managers, project leaders, and other employees regarding financial matters. You will also supervise the department's economists and collaborate with the agency's other controllers on various issues. You will report to the department head and be part of the department's management team, where we collectively develop goals, strategies, processes, and working methods, as well as follow up on our operations. About the Unit The department's mission is to provide expert support for both military and civilian actors within total defense through long-term research, focusing on chemical and biological weapons, nuclear weapons, and their radiological consequences. The department currently consists of approximately 175 employees. The majority of the operations are based in Umeå, but we also have activities in Kista. Our assignments mainly consist of research grants from the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with a total turnover of about 350 million SEK. Requirements We are looking for someone with an academic degree in economics and several years of experience in operational and financial management as well as budgeting. You can put numbers into context and understand how they affect the whole. You also have experience, interest, and a good ability to develop processes and working methods within an organization. As a person, you are structured with a good ability to organize and prioritize work effectively, with a strong focus on quality and accuracy. You are also self-driven and take the initiative to independently drive and develop your work. At the same time, you have a good ability to collaborate with others and enjoy doing so. You are proficient in both spoken and written communication and have an interest in conveying financial understanding throughout the organization. We place great emphasis on your personal qualities. Meritorious You should have advanced knowledge of Excel, as it is your primary working tool. It is also advantageous if you have previously worked within a government agency or in larger companies.
