We are seeking someone who wants to work as an assistant in the research project GeneaoLogies of Old Wealth for 6 months, with a planned start in January 2026. Workplace and Research Project Description The position is located in the History Department and is part of a larger research project involving a project manager, a researcher working abroad, and a research assistant. Most of the work will be conducted at the Historical Institution in Lund, with occasional work at archives within Sweden. The research project studies the economic elite in Sweden during the period 1800-1950 and analyzes wealth and inheritance using a genealogical method, which means following multiple generations within the same family. The project particularly focuses on probate inventories, which provide an overview of wealth's extent and content. Economic inequality from a historical perspective is a significant research field, both in Sweden and internationally. As an assistant in the project, you will be introduced to a large and highly current research direction. Work Tasks and Responsibilities The position includes: - Systematic collection of data on wealth and family conditions from digitized source material, primarily probate inventories - Building family trees for the included families using genealogical tools - Minor collection work at other archive institutions within Sweden - Preliminary analysis work - Supporting the project through simple administrative and communication tasks - Supporting the research environment and its activities Qualifications Requirements: - Degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., history or economic history) - Ability to decipher handwritten Swedish source material from the 19th and 20th centuries - Excellent Swedish skills, spoken and written - Good English skills, spoken and written - Ability to work independently and systematically - Good collaboration skills Meriting factors: - Experience working with handwritten source material - Experience with quantitative data collection and analysis - Experience with databases, especially Excel - Experience with genealogy and genealogical tools - Experience working within a research project - Interest in historical research themes such as property, equality, inheritance, and family relations Other Information This is a full-time, fixed-term position for 6 months, with a planned start on January 15, 2026, or as soon as possible by agreement.
