About this role

The Department for Archaeological Collections is responsible for SHM's archaeological and osteological collections and is part of the Division for Collections and Research. As the authority's expert unit on matters concerning the archaeological and osteological collections and their contexts, the unit's employees participate in various projects, respond to inquiries, and manage loans. Accessioning and registering newly acquired material is a central part of the unit's work. The unit also engages in collection management, storage issues, and preventive conservation. Additionally, the unit's staff collaborates with personnel from other departments on program activities, exhibition production, and the management of permanent exhibitions. Together, we make history accessible to more people! The collections managed by the unit span chronologically from the earliest times of humanity to the present day, encompassing approximately 10 million objects as well as a very large osteological collection. The collections continuously grow as finds from archaeological excavations are added to SHM. They serve as a resource not only for the authority's exhibitions but also for research both nationally and internationally. The unit is also responsible for the textile collections associated with the Historical Museum. These collections primarily consist of archaeological textiles and textiles from the Church of Sweden. We are currently in a dynamic development phase and are seeking a knowledgeable and committed curator who, with a foundation in textiles, also wishes to work broadly with our archaeological collections and contribute to our operations. **Job Responsibilities** You will have specific responsibility for the textile collections associated with the Historical Museum and, as needed, work with other parts of the archaeological collections. This means that you will sometimes work in an expert role within textiles, but you should also be prepared to contribute to other areas within the authority's operational scope. Within the textile collection, you will have primary responsibility for tasks related to collection management, such as handling loans, accessioning newly acquired archaeological material, organizing, documenting, and making existing collections accessible. You will also manage external inquiries regarding laboratory analyses of objects in the textile collection. Together with conservators, you will work on preventive measures to ensure the long-term preservation of the collection. You will handle contacts and inquiries from both the public and the research community. Additionally, you will actively contribute to program activities, as well as to the authority's exhibition activities and other public initiatives. In addition to the tasks specific to the textile collections, you will also work broadly with collection management. Together with the other curators in the unit, you will participate in the loan operations, receive research visits, and contribute to the accessioning work within the archaeological collection. Furthermore, you will also work on priority areas for the authority as needed, such as digitization, preparedness and repatriation. **Qualifications** You should have very good knowledge of prehistoric, medieval, and early modern textiles from both cultural-historical and technical perspectives. A foundational post-secondary education in the textile field is required. It is advantageous to have advanced knowledge of textiles particularly relevant to SHM's collections, as well as professional experience in similar work within collection management in the museum sector. Experience in communicating knowledge about older craft techniques with a focus on textiles to audiences with varying backgrounds is also meritorious. We would also appreciate knowledge of or experience in other important areas for the job, such as work within preparedness and repatriation, digitization, the use of laboratory methods in heritage science/laboratory archaeology, and repatriation. You should have good proficiency in both Swedish and English. SHM's starting point is the view of humans as active, responsible, and learning. We also operate within the framework of the state's values and regulations. We are looking for someone who has a strong ability to take responsibility for both their own part of the operation and for the entirety that their work is a part of. You are motivated by collaborating with other competencies within the organization, and you are receptive to different perspectives. You have a good ability to work independently within given frameworks and to deliver on deadlines while maintaining quality. You also need to have a good ability to manage many different tasks simultaneously, as well as to maintain good order in your work. **Employment Conditions** The position is a permanent employment with a 6-month probationary period. Start date is to be agreed upon, preferably during the first quarter of 2026. The job location is Stockholm, and work at the authority's various museums, offices, and external storage facilities may occur. A background check will be requested upon employment. Travel, such as courier trips, may occur. **Other** For inquiries, please contact unit manager Elisabet Regner at tel 08-519 556 67. The union representative for SACO is Jonas Lindwall at 08-402 30 21. Information about employment conditions can be obtained from Emelie Gloza, HR specialist, at 08-519 556 07.
