Department Overview

The Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics conducts research in numerical mathematics, discrete mathematics, mathematical modeling and analysis, mathematical statistics, and mathematics for artificial intelligence. Our teaching occurs at all levels and includes mathematics, mathematical statistics, and computer science. Our partners include international research groups, academic institutions, public organizations, and businesses.

Position

The Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics is seeking teaching assistants for the spring semester of 2026. The application deadline is Tuesday, December 2, 2025.

Job Description

The role of a teaching assistant involves:

  • Delivering lessons in mathematics courses for the technical-nature science foundation year,
  • Teaching mathematics and mathematical statistics at the undergraduate level,
  • Providing guidance during computer labs and self-study sessions,
  • Assessing students' lab reports, quizzes, and exams,
  • Additional tasks such as serving as a contact teaching assistant for the Master’s program in Industrial Economics,
  • Participating in activities directed at primary and secondary schools.

Qualifications

You who are applying for the position of teaching assistant should:

  • Be enrolled in a course at Umeå University,
  • Have at least 45 credits in mathematics and/or mathematical statistics with good results,
  • Possess social skills and an interest in explaining mathematics,
  • Be well-versed in tools such as Matlab, Python, or R,
  • Be a Swedish speaker since the courses are conducted in Swedish.

Selection among applicants will be based on qualifications, suitability, and experience with similar tasks. We would like to see a balanced gender distribution among our teaching assistants and therefore particularly encourage women to apply.

About the Employment

The extent of employment will be between 25% and 50% of full-time over 3 to 6 months, beginning on February 1, 2025, or by agreement.
