About Us
The Department of Cognitive Neuroscience and Philosophy at the School of Bioscience currently offers three educational programs, including two bachelor's programs and a one-year master's program. All three lead to a degree in cognitive neuroscience. The bachelor's programs have a unique focus on neuropsychology and consciousness studies, respectively, and the application of positive psychology (i.e., the science of well-being). Education focusing on consciousness and the "first-person perspective" has been available at the University since 1997. Currently, there is ongoing development work regarding the possibility of collaborating to offer a two-year master's program. The subject has an EEG and virtual reality laboratory that is used for both education and research. Research within the department focuses on consciousness and its neural mechanisms. This includes the study of altered states of consciousness such as sleep, anesthesia, dreams, and hypnosis. Attention, visual perception, body perception, ethics, subjective well-being, and cognition are also studied. The research partly addresses the theoretical and philosophical issues concerning human consciousness.
The position is within the field of cognitive neuroscience, which is a multidisciplinary area whose central purpose is to theoretically connect and interact the psychological sciences with the biological sciences. The area has a unique focus at the University on the study of consciousness and its relationship to the brain, particularly altered and higher states of consciousness.
