Associate Senior Lecturer in North American Studies
Job Responsibilities
The purpose of the associate senior lecturer position is to provide the instructor with an opportunity to develop independence as a researcher and qualify scientifically and pedagogically to meet the requirements for a senior lecturer position.
The position involves 50% research in North American studies and up to 50% teaching and administration. Teaching includes courses in American studies as well as other courses within the English department. Teaching also encompasses supervision, course responsibility, course administration, and course development. The work involves collaboration with the surrounding society and active participation in SINAS' organizational development, in cooperation with the SINAS director and other staff. As an associate senior lecturer, you are expected to actively apply for external research funding, follow developments in your field, and contribute to pedagogical and scientific development work. The appointed individual is expected to take active and regular part in all SINAS activities in Uppsala.
Qualification Requirements
Eligible for appointment as an associate senior lecturer in North American studies are those who have completed a doctoral degree in a relevant humanities or social science discipline, demonstrated pedagogical skills, and possess the personal qualities required to perform the position effectively. Both the doctoral thesis and subsequent research should have a clear focus on the study of the United States regarding history, social life, and/or politics, including its transnational relations with the outside world.
Preference will be given to candidates who have completed a doctoral degree or reached equivalent competence no more than five years before the application deadline. A prerequisite for demonstrating pedagogical skills is completion of a college pedagogical education relevant to the position, comprising at least five weeks or equivalent knowledge. If special circumstances exist, the college pedagogical education can be completed during the first two years of employment.
Documented ability to teach in English and use Swedish as a working language is required.
The applicant must possess the personal qualities necessary to perform the position effectively. Such personal qualities include excellent collaboration skills, collegiate responsibility, and flexibility.
Scientific competence, pedagogical skills, and professional expertise must be relevant to the position's subject content and associated job responsibilities.
Appointment Period and Promotion
An associate senior lecturer position can be held for a maximum of four years. At the end of the associate lecturer appointment, the applicant has the right to be evaluated for a senior lecturer position. Promotion to senior lecturer will be based on a comprehensive assessment of the applicant's scientific, pedagogical, administrative, and leadership skills. Special emphasis will be placed on work performed during the associate lecturer appointment. A fundamental requirement is that the applicant meets the qualifications for senior lecturer according to the employment regulations of Uppsala University and the Faculty of Languages. Additionally, the applicant must have satisfactorily completed their job responsibilities. A written application for evaluation for promotion to senior lecturer must be submitted to the Faculty of Languages Board no later than six months before the associate lecturer appointment expires.
